Although fairly young compared with some models, the Sterling by Music Man SUB AX3 Electric Guitar is already becoming a bit of a classic. This guitar has been designed to be an affordable variation of Music Man’s Axis model, which itself was originally called the EVH Signature, the signature model for Eddie Van Halen in the ‘90s.
The AX3 is a joy to play, and we'd heartily recommend it for a beginner who wants to hone their chops on an quality value axe with an 80s vibe.- Andrew Gregory (musicradar.com)
With a form that is instantly recognisable, the Sterling by Music Man S.U.B. AX3 starts things off with a body based on the Axis blueprint. The design is not just beautiful to behold, however, but beautiful to hold, with delicate curves and a single cutaway that opens up access to the upper frets.
Not the most common of wood types, jabon has been used to craft the Sterling by Music Man SUB AX3, with a slightly heavier feel than basswood but also an improved tone from the increased amount of resonance created. Although a solid bodied guitar, this model also benefits from a bound quilt maple image top. This is not an actual maple top, however, as that would push the cost of the guitar too high, but it is a decorative addition that really makes the guitar stand out.
Asymmetrical Maple Neck
The guitar’s neck is crafted from maple and is carved to an asymmetrical design. This gives you an excellent playing area, not matter which techniques you are employing. The neck is thicker and rounder near the nut, giving a larger circumference to grip for chord work, which then gets flatter further down the neck for fast-paced finger-style playing. The neck is also satin-finished, as this gives a wonderfully tactile feel, no matter what you’re playing.
The neck is joined to the body of the Sterling by Music Man SUB AX3, via a 5-bolt neck joint, for secure and seamless neck-to-body contact. The neck heel has also been specially-contoured to provide comfort when playing in the upper register.
Topping the neck is a maple fingerboard adorned with 22-medium frets and dot position inlays, and measuring 12-inches in radius. At one end of the neck you will find a vintage-style tremolo with easy-to-adjust saddles, while at the other is an easy-access truss rod adjuster.
Humbucker and Single-coil Tones
While the Sterling by Music Man SUB AX3 Electric Guitar is loaded up with a pair of high output “Zebra” coil humbucking pickups, they are wired to a 5-way pickup selector switch. While this may seem odd at first, it is actually an excellent feature, as it allows you to access not only the power of the humbuckers, but single-coil tones also.
This means that you can use the thick, boosted mid-range, and additional volume of the humbuckers, but you can quickly and easily switch to single coil sounds. This is no afterthought, however. The single-coils give you crisp, articulate tones that are perfect for rock and blues, while in the middle position you have the perfect country sound, all from one instrument.
