Being a Musician in Leeds

The City of Leeds has plenty on offer to keep musicians busy. Large venues, which attract the biggest names on the touring circuit, and smaller, more culturally explosive venues combine to make Leeds one of the most exciting musical hotspots in the UK.

As a city known for being so welcoming to students, there is no shortage of places to play and watch live music. Leeds city centre is peppered with venues hosting all kinds of musical genres. From the blues, funk and jazz which are stock in trade at Smokestack (Lower Briggate) to the mellow vibes at Oporto on Call Lane, there's music on offer to suit any taste.

Belgrave Music Hall, in the city's Northern Quarter, is a favourite of up and coming bands, while The Library, situated in the buzzing student area, hosts regular live music nights as part of its long-running 360 Club.

The Cockpit, situated underneath an imposing railway bridge, is a favourite on the touring schedule of many small to medium sized bands. It offers a great chance to see acts “before they were big”.

Leeds' own O2 Academy, on Cookridge Street, is a unique 2,000+ capacity venue which hosts a variety of events, including live music and club nights.

The 13,000 capacity First Direct Arena, which opened in 2013, put the city's name on the global musical map and enhanced its credentials to welcome some of the biggest names around. Already, since it opened, it has welcomed Bruce Springsteen, Depeche Mode and local sons Kaiser Chiefs.

And, of course, we couldn't end without mentioning the world famous Leeds Festival. This annual bash is the highlight of many music fan's calendar, with around 80,000 people descending on Bramham Park for a weekend of the hottest rock, metal, grime and EDM.

With everything that's on offer, you can see why Leeds is a popular choice for musicians.
