Somehow the VX amplifier range, which is comprised of the VX I and VX II, manages to combine just about everything you could want in a compact combo amp with a winning mix of immersive sound, versatile amp sounds and effects, lightweight and compact design, robustness, and affordability.
With Great Power Comes a Small Box
The smaller of the two amps in the range, the Vox VX I Guitar Combo Amplifier weighs in with an impressive 15-watt RMS power output, teamed with a 6.5-inch speaker, which makes it the perfect practice amp. Don’t let the power output and speaker size fool you into thinking this is a quite amp, however. Thanks to its internal components and construction, this little box can hold its own, with a level of volume that belies dimensions.
Get this Monster to the VET!
Standing apart from other smaller combos, the Vox VX I Guitar Amplifier utilises Vox’s new VET (Virtual Element Technology) circuit. With this modelling technology incorporated into the amp’s design, it is able to offer incredibly accurate models (they’re best to date), thanks to the company’s commitment to analysing the circuitry of an extensive range of classic amps from both Britain and America.
11 Amp Models & 8 Classic Effects
The diverse array of amp models available with the Vox VX I include sounds similar to some of the most coveted amps in history. The classic AC30 is on-board, along with British and American amps from the 1950s/’60s, modern amps, and more covering high-gain, crunch, and clean sounds.
The list of amps available is comprised of: Deluxe CL, Tweed 4x10, Boutique CL, Boutique OD, Vox AC30, Vox AC30TB, Brit 1959, Brit 800, Brit VM, SL-OD, Double Rec.
Alongside the bountiful range of amp models on offer is a collection of eight classic effects to use with them, covering modulation, delay, and reverb. The effects available are: chorus, flanger, phase, tremolo, analog delay, tape echo, spring reverb, hall reverb.
Alongside the amp’s 11 presets, you also have two slots available to you to craft, save, and recall your own set ups. You can use a two-button footswitch for remote control of these two user presets, or plug in the Vox VFS5 Footswitch (available separately) and the slots available increases to eight.
Tube Sound with the Versatility of a Modelling Amp
Giving you modelling versatility with tube sound, the Vox VXI Combo Amp utilises Vox’s new FET-based analog circuit. Built specifically for the VX Series, this technology is incorporated into the power amp, which itself inherits technology used in the Valvetronix Series; all of this helping to reproduce the characteristics of a tube amp, from their responsiveness and dynamic overdrive, right down to the distinctive sag.
All Things Considered
With the components of the amp down, Vox put their attention to the cabinet design of the Vox VX I. The speaker and housing for these components play as much of a role as the components themselves, when considering the sound as a whole. They therefore utilised a unique bass reflex design and a sealed, one-piece speaker enclosure. All of which have been crafted to optimise resonance and produce authentic sound, efficiently.
Giving the projection and tone of a classic amp, the Vox VX I incorporates a wooden baffle, while the cabinet is made from ABS; known for its light weight and durability; both important factors in portable amplifier construction. The summation of the amplifier’s design is a sound quality previously unseen at this price bracket.
