The Yamaha MOXF6 is a 61-note, synthesizer workstation that expands on the massive success of the previous MOX synths. One of the key updates to the new range is the switch to a sound engine derived from the flagship, Motif XF workstation.
This includes two stunning grand piano sounds, sampled in meticulous detail from a Yamaha CFIIIS 9-foot grand, and a 7-foot S6. With exceptional dynamic response, and expressive performance, these are an exceptional addition to the synth. The full selection of sounds covers a huge range, from authentic acoustic sounds, such as strings, and orchestral instruments, to great electric pianos, organs, and synth and percussion sounds for all genres.
In total, a massive 741 MB of waveforms are loaded to the synth (with 1,152 preset sounds and 72 drum kits), providing an exceptionally broad tonal palette.
Superb effects with Virtual Circuitry Modelling
The MOXF6’s effects processor has also been subject to an update from its predecessor. Now, it is based on Yamaha Virtual Circuitry Modelling. This employs clever mathematical models to recreate the circuitry of classic hardware effects, from rack-mount studio gear, to stomp-box guitar effects. In addition, the MOXF6 employs technology from its high-end consoles, and even the REV-X reverb from the legendary SPX2000 studio effects processor.
Piano playing vocalists may also be pleased to hear that it a microphone is connected via the inputs at the rear, vocoder, harmoniser or other effects can applied to the vocal performance.
Expandable internal flash memory, performance mode and onboard sequencer
Another change to the MOXF6 is the newly expandable internal flash RAM. Now, the addition of an optional flashboard will allow an additional 1GB of sounds and samples. This enables the owner to customize the onboard sounds to their personal needs, via Yamaha’s promotional content.
The synth’s performance mode provides the tools to layer up to four different sounds together, to create thicker, or more complex sounds. This is enhanced by the Interactive Arp engine, which creates patterns from simple, held chords.
Like previous MOX models, the MOXF6 also has an onboard sequencer. With 16-tracks, complete, sophisticated tracks can be put together using only the synthesizer.
All in one studio solution
One of the most unique features of the MOX synths was the built-in audio interface. This means that, when used with a software DAW package, it could be used as a complete recording interface via USB. Thankfully, the feature remains, allowing four simultaneous input tracks (a stereo input for internal sounds, and two external inputs), making it easy to record from the synth itself, and from other instruments such as guitars, or other equipment.
Plus, the single USB connection allows for MIDI data to be inputted to your software. A remote mode assigns the synths controllers, allowing for Cubase specific control. Additionally, a bundle of software is included, comprising Cubase AI 7, the Steinberg Prologue VSTi synth, and YC-3B Tone Wheel Organ VSTi virtual organ plug-in.
Another powerful feature is the 8-Element editor. Whilst all of the instruments can be edited purely on the synth, once hooked up to this powerful editor, you can change literally hundreds of parameters, completely shaping your sound and taking you deeper into the world of synthesis than ever before.
In short, when added to a computer, the Yamaha MOXF6 is a complete studio solution, with great sounds, excellent effects, superb software integration and recording features, and an onboard sequencer should you wish to use it on its own. All of this is underpinned by Yamaha’s stunning Motif XF sound engine. The MOXF6 is a mini powerhouse.
