The Zoom H4n Handy Recorder is so comprehensively and impressively featured, yet so simple to operate that it almost beggars belief. The built in perfect X/Y stereo pair of built in condenser mics are incredibly high fidelity, matched with a pristine digitally controlled preamp for knife edge accuracy. The phantom powered XLR inputs enable you to record using any microphones, or use the low-Z inputs to plug in guitar/bass. You can use internal and external sources to record 4 channles simultaneously, and Broadcast Wave Format enables you to record tracks with timecode for AV work.
Recording quality wise you can record studio quality 24-bit/96kHz PCM wave audio with the Zoom H4n Handy Recorder. You can also record to MP3, for smaller files and increased storage. There is also a Stamina Mode, which can record 16-bit 44.1kHz audio for up to 10 hours.
The Zoom H4-N Handy Recorder has an Auto-record feature that waits and for an audio signal above a pre-specified amplitude, and the stops recording when the signal dips below that amplitude for pre-specified length of time. This is great for speaches, as you can record each speaker and have the gaps between speakers automatically cut out. The pre-record feature keeps a buffer of 2 seconds in memory at all times so if you want to make sure you always catch the beginning of performances, this mode gives you a headstart - when you hit record it adds the previous two seconds to the beginning.
The H4N's Built-in X/Y stereo mics can be set to a 90° or 120° capturing angle, so depending on how spread out your sound source is you can focus your microhpone accordingly. The perfection of the X/Y angle means there is no phase cancellation between these microphones. Audio sources hit them at the same time so you get an amazingly wide and full sounding stereo field.
This digital recorder also has a reference speaker, so you can listen to the recordings and review them on the go. The body is also rubberized to protect the internals from minor knocks
There are lots of great features for musicians. Adjust the audio playback speed for phrase training practice. Use the onboard tuner and metronome for rehearsing and recording. There are studio effects, and amp effects so you can make demo recordings and backing tracks straight into the device. Plug in the USB port to a computer to use with the included Cubase LE software. You can even normalise, convert to MP3 and split audio clips straight from the device, and apply the low cut filter to remove noise. You can also convert stereo out to a mono mix for reference and for checking for any phasing issues.
For advanced micing there is a mid-side matrix decoder on-board, so you can make excellent stereo recordings and convert them in the device.
