Ampeg was there at the birth of bass amplification and the Portaflex Series has been around for over 50 years now. With a legacy as great as this you would rightfully have high expectations from the Ampeg Portaflex PF-210HE Bass Cabinet; prepare to have them met.
Portaflex – A Vintage, Modern ClassicStraight away you can see the vintage design that has gone into crafting the Ampeg Portaflex PF210HE Bass Cabinet; making it feel like your dusting off a classic. With all the modern trimmings, however, there is a lot more than meets the eye with this cab.
Let Her Rip!
Two 10-inch ceramic Eminence LF drivers inside the cab offers 450W RMS of power handling (at 8 ohms) with pure Ampeg tone shining through every note you play. Joining this is a 1-inch HF compression driver with an L-Pad level control. The control offers three choices: On, Off, and a -6dB padded level, which reduces the level of treble. Also on offer here is a frequency response of 53 Hz - 17 kHz, and a sensitivity rating of 99.6 dB SPL at 1w/1m.
The controlled lows, punchy tone and good amount of volume, rather than all-out earthquakes, makes the Ampeg Portaflex PF 210HE Bass Cabinet excellent for a number of applications including: gigging in small venues, studio work, and monitoring. However, you can open up the sound more, via the cabinet’s two jack sockets. Wired in parallel at the rear of the cabinet, with this pairing you can either connect to an amplifier or daisy chain to another cab… a second PF-210HE may be?
Strong and Beautiful
Ensuring the Ampeg Portaflex PF-210HE Bass Cabinet is as strong as it is tone-full, it utilises robust, 15mm poplar plywood in the creation of its enclosure, which is then covered with a black diamond tolex that, along with providing an extra layer of protection, also looks incredible.
The cab also employees a vintage B-15 grille cloth, which gives a nod to one of the most legendary bass amps around and ensures the safety of the speakers.
Metal corners screwed into the cabinet help to further protect the Ampeg PF-210HE from damage, while feet positioned on the underside protect the bottom of the cab and ensure the easy flow of sound. The feet can also be removed and replaced with the set of included wheels, for easy transportation. When you’ve got the unit in place, you put the feet back in place and store the wheels inside the cab with the included pouch. The unit is very low in weight, just 48 lbs / 21.6 kg, so moving it around is a relatively painless task.
Vintage Portaflex flip-top cabinet design
As a Portaflex, the Ampeg PF-210HE Bass Cabinet is designed with an incredibly useful flip-top lid. This addition may seem inconsequential but is a seriously useful feature. A Portaflex head amp can be secured to the cabinet’s lid, via the included mounting kit, which stops the head from moving or being taken at a gig. When you’re done, just release the four clasps, flip the lid upside down, and place it back on the cab, and secure the clasps. The head will be stored inside the cabinet, for easy trasportation and storage.
