The Ashdown Geezer Butler Head of Doom Bass Guitar Amplifier Head is a 600-Watt Signature beast of epic proportions. As one of the founder members of influential hard rock heavyweights, Black Sabbath, Geezer Butler has inspired generations of bassists with his uncompromising style. The collaboration between Ashdown and Butler has given rise to the Head of Doom, which has received the seal of approval from the man himself.
This amp is the closest I have found to emulate the 'old school' sound I had in the '70s, with its punch and clarity it has the sound of DOOM I love- Geezer Butler - Black Sabbath
Tone shaping options
When it comes to gig rigs, the Head of Doom is designed to accommodate the flexibility that Butler prefers when taking to the stage. The Input is a single instrument input with Passive/Active selector switch to accommodate active or passive bass guitar pickups. The input control allows you to set the input signal level through the preamp, with Ashdown's classic VU Meter display on hand to guide you. Along with tweaks to the EQ, you can find that sweet spot you're looking for with ease, nudging the amp towards the red zone for a grittier sound.
The Push Flat/Shape button forces a fixed EQ on the preamp for a punchy edginess to the sound in the out position. The in position returns the preamp to a flat frequency response. This is a footswitchable function that can be operated when the button is in the out position for deft, dynamic, hands-free control.
The impressive 9-band EQ section consists of BASS/MIDDLE/TREBLE controls with three sliders between each. From a flat response to scooped sections to emphasis different frequencies, the level of control available allows you to hone in on the exact sound that you're looking for.
The Head of Doom wouldn't be complete without a DOOM control, which allows the signal to be routed via a clean solid-state amp section or a dual triode tube amp/overdrive section. Whether you're feeling a tight and articulate clean sound with faithful consistency, or a saturated warmth with a powerful drive, simply push the DOOM button and you're good to go.
The balanced D.I. is designed to provide fuss-free connectivity to a balanced microphone input for straightforward gigging. The floating ground is referenced to the connected mixing desk to prevent the need for ground lifting, and it is unaffected by phantom power. The Line Out socket allows you to connect to an external power amp for driving additional speaker cabs, giving you an all-powerful and unholy rig. The speaker output sockets on the rear panel are a pair of Neutrik combi Speakon outputs, which deliver the full might of the 600 Watts RMS in sublime fashion.
The Tuner Out socket allows a tuner to be connected, whilst the Push to Mute button allows you to cut the output for silent tuning on stage. There is even a line input for connecting an external audio source for practise, rehearsing, or even a second pre-amp. The Effects Send/Return allows external effects to be incorporated, whilst the 4-way footswitch socket allows you to connect the Ashdown 4-way footswitch (sold separately) for footswitchable control over the front panels. LED lights highly the controls selected, making it easy to keep on top of things on a dimly lit stage.
As we'd expect from a partnership between Ashdown and Geezer Butler, this amp is an absolute tank that any bassist would be proud to town. If you're looking for indomitable power in its purest form, look no further than the Ashdown Geezer Butler Head of Doom Bass Guitar Amplifier Head.
