Assisted Instrument Purchase Scheme

Assisted Instrument Purchase Scheme

The Assisted Instrument Purchase Scheme (AIPS) enables pupils in LEA schools and Academies to purchase instruments without paying VAT. The scheme was brought in by the government over 30 years ago to ensure that more pupils can afford to be involved in music and own an instrument.

How the scheme works:

  1. The pupil choses the portable instrument they wish to have.
  2. The parent must ask the school if they are willing to accept the AIPS.
  3. The school places a formal purchase order with us as normal.
  4. The parent pays the ex-VAT price to the school (usually when the school places the order).
  5. The instrument will be delivered to the school, and our invoice will be raised to the school including VAT.
  6. The instrument will be given to the pupil at school.
  7. The school will reclaim the VAT at the end of its usual accounting period.

What are the rules of the scheme?

HM Revenue and Customs have laid down the rules to ensure that the scheme is not abused:
