Online music channel Ont’ Sofa has welcomed Dawsons Music into its growing family, as it seeks to expand its reach further into the UK music scene.

The popular YouTube channel, which has more than 84,000 subscribers, gives up and coming musicians a platform to play their music to a global audience with one catch – everything must be captured in one take, with absolutely no autotune or studio trickery.

The formula has proved wildly successful, with its videos having been viewed more than 25 million times. It attracts hundreds of applications to play every month, from which around 25 are selected and given their chance to perform on the now-famous sofa.

Ont’ Sofa, which started life in 2012, is run by close friends and business partners Ben Davis and Jason Odle. Under their stewardship, the channel has filmed over 1,000 sessions and has attracted the likes of number one selling artist Becky Hill, Lucy Spraggan, JP Cooper, Alex Clare and Frank Turner to perform for it.

It’s quite a transformation for the project, which started life in a small studio with little more than a sofa and two enthusiastic music fans. The team now consists of seven people, and was recently subject to private investment which the group hope will elevate them to the next level.

Ben Davis, from Ont’ Sofa, said: “It started out as a hobby… We invited a few friends around to play their stuff, put it up on YouTube and knew straight away we were on to something good. 1,000 sessions later, we are happy to have been proved right and are proud to be able to offer a platform to some of the best new talent around.

“We always knew there was exciting, interesting and unique artists within the UK music scene, and love that we are able to present good, honest live music to the world. Indeed, with what we believe to be the best A&R tool in the industry, we now seek to partner with a major record label to jointly identify and develop the finest up and coming talent in the music industry.”

Mark Taylor, managing director of Dawsons, said: “Ont’ Sofa is an excellent example of how the internet has opened the doors for British musical talent to appear on a global stage. We are fully behind the project, and are looking forward to working with the team and helping them reach new heights.”
