Lapwing: Spreading Some Hope at the End of 2020

The Song Everyone Should Be Listening To This Christmas!

Supporting musicians is in our blood, part of the very foundations that Dawsons Music & Sound is built on.  Whether young or old, local to one of our stores or not, supporting talent is important to us.  Plus, after a year like 2020, a great news story is just what everyone needs.

That is why when friends of Dawsons Music & Sound, Lapwing, went viral not once but twice with their festive tune “Hope Christmas Gets You To Me”, we knew we had to get their story for Studio D!

Teachers By Day, Songwriters By Night

English teacher Phil Ford and Physics teacher Tim Kwant from Glasgow, the duo behind Lapwing has had a whirlwind few weeks, with the likes of Graham Norton and Lorraine Kelly sharing the video of their song, which was played on BBC Radio 2 by Ken Bruce for the first time on 11th December!

The song is a heartfelt ballad, whose lyrics were dreamed up in the Maryhill, Glasgow branch of Tesco whilst Phil shopped with his children and was then sent to Tim who composed the music. They said they’re always wanted to write a Christmas song, and they’ve hit the mark with “Hope Christmas Gets You To Me”.

In a year as strange as 2020, where due to COVID-19, Christmas will be a lonely time for many, this song really sums up how many people feel. The video, filmed in the deserted streets of Glasgow City Centre, adds to the feeling of loneliness perfectly.

Viral Stars

The video had over 320,000 views, but then a technical disaster struck, and the original video was deleted, losing all likes and comments. Undeterred, Phil and Time decided to start again from scratch, and the video has now had more than 120,000 views since early December 2020.

Within all of this newfound fame, we are honoured that Phil and Tim found time to chat to our Head of Retail Operations, Les Hume, about what the song means, their writing process and what the future may hold.

As of writing this, Lapwing was sitting at Number 43 in the iTunes Music Chart, and with a social media army behind them, we can see “Hope Christmas Gets You To Me” rising further up the charts!  Well done guys: it really is a song which sums up how a lot of people are feeling right now whilst offering an essential message of hope. We can’t wait to see what the future holds for Lapwing.
