Review: KRK KNS 6400 Headphones
The KRK KNS 6400 Headphones bring clarity to late night sessions…
The KRK KNS 6400 headphones are one of two new pairs of headphones from the legendary US studio monitor company. The instantly recognisable yellow speaker cones of KRK ‘s studio monitors are now, seemingly, everywhere. The premium Expose range and VXT range have infiltrated pro studios everywhere, with the more affordable Rokit range proving to be staggeringly popular with everyone from DJ’s, to bedroom producers, to professional engineers. With decades of experience behind them, products brim with design resulting from years of evolution and development. And, although headphones are a new foray for the company, this extensive experience is apparent in the KRK KNS 6400 s.
Closed Back Design
Like the KNS 8400‘s, the KRK KNS 6400 s are a closed-back design. This equips the headphones well for a variety of different studio duties. Providing excellent isolation( quoted at 26 dBA), the KNS 6400 s reduce ambient noise and spillage very effectively, meaning that these are ideal cans for the recording booth. If excellent isolation is one of the key things that you’re looking for, however, the 8400 offers an improved 30dBA. Still, the KNS 6400 are more than adequate for the vast majority of recording situations.
The KNS 6400 s were designed primarily, as a quality monitoring solution for engineers on the move, or in situations where studio monitors are not practical. And in this respect, the headphones deliver. With exceptional frequency response (ranging from 10 Hz-22 kHz), low frequency response is full, and defined without being ‘hyped’, and high frequencies are detailed and open. The lightweight drivers preserve accurate transient reproduction, and all of this is achieved with incredibly low distortion (quoted at <0.1%).
Like their ‘bigger brothers’, the KNS 8400, the detailed, revealing mid-range is reminiscent of the VXT monitor range.
Unlike many heavy-duty studio headphones, the KRK KNS 6400 s are very comfortable to wear. Though they use acoustic cellular foam ear cushions rather than the 8400s memory foam, the design, coupling with a headband, which exerts low pressure on the wearer’s head, makies them comfortable, even when worn for hours.
Upholding KRK ‘s reputation for quality monitoring solutions, the KNS 6400 headphones are robust, accurate and detailed headphones with great frequency response, making them ideal for a myriad of studio situations.
