The pursuit of the ultimate rock sound
The Katana 100 combo amplifier along with the entire range from the Katana series adopts its name from the traditional sword carried by the historic samurai of Japan, and is a symbol of honour, precision, and artistry in Japanese culture. These qualities are inherent in the design and tonal capabilities of this amplifier, as each aspect has been meticulously designed fusing traditional craftsmanship with breakthrough functionality to provide the discerning guitarist with the next generation of rock amplifiers.
The Katana 100 amplifier has been designed for guitarists who take pride in their tone and want to be able to benefit from a wide range of responsive sounds. The Katana 100 provides 100 watts of pure power through a single, custom designed 12-inch speaker which is driven by a specially designed method originally developed for the flagship Waza amp that optimizes the speaker to cabinet relationship. This fine tuning of design results in a wide range of gorgeous tonalities, offering unique punch when you need it and unrivalled presence that was usually only available with high-end amplifier designs. The innovative Power Control is a great feature, and allows you to enjoy all the tonal qualities of the amplifier at lower volumes without any loss of response or tone. This means you can gig, record and practice with it and enjoy the same cranked-amp tones at all volumes.
Five amplifier characters at the touch of a button
The Katana-100 amp, along with the entire range, features 5 amp characters which have been sharpened to perfection by the BOSS engineering team, providing an array of rich organic vintage tones to the modern, and highly coveted high-gain amplifier sounds utilised by some of the world’s best rock guitarists. The result is a rich plethora of beautiful sounding amplifier tones to keep every guitarist happy. Activate Clean, Crunch, Lead, Brown, and Acoustic tones at the touch of a button. The Clean channel offers crystal clear, transparent tones, whereas the Crunch gives you that grit and satisfying bite you need. The Lead option has a wide gain range meaning you can dial in your perfect tone for soloing, whether you’re a blues musician or complete shredder. The Brown and Acoustic tones are where the Katana’s versatility really shines. Designed with the DNA of the Waza amp, Brown provides high gain tones that rock players will really appreciate due to the high gain, but effortlessly smooth response. The Acoustic character features optimised tonal capabilities which have been meticulously designed for acoustic-electric guitarists, meaning your guitar sounds how it should.

The design itself is sleek, sharp and precise, much like the sword from which the Katana takes its name. Bold, black grille cloth is broken up only by the striking contrast of the white BOSS logo and Katana insignia – making it a beautiful stage amp that is striking yet understated at the same time.

I initially looked at this series for connectivity - I needed something that would fit into a home recording set up, which it does with both USB and analogue line out, and it also has an effects loop - it's the cheapest decent amp I found with both. The Line outs are Cab Sim, and you can (on a patch by patch basis) take the effects loop out of the circuit for a cleaner path. There's obviously connectivity for footswitches as well.
This amp is loud. On the 100W setting I took it to about 50% master volume before I thought I would blow the windows out, but you can attenuate it to 50W and 0.5W which sounds puny but fills a living room fine. Seriously the neighbours love it. Honest. And the loss in quality is negligible at both extremes. The preamp gain and volume play nicely into the signal chain, so you can tweak away without any nasty volume surprises.
It sounds good, the sound is crisp and defined, with a chunky low end (which handled an 8 string with ease). There's a pretty full featured global EQ in the software BTW, as well as the 3 band panel EQ.
The amp models alone are worth the price of admission (no jokes about the effects of the "brown channel" please) but the effects are actually stunning - right down to the randomness and noise of the Fuzz pedal emulations.
You do need a PC to make the most of it as there Tone Centre software allows you to select from a massive range. This does make the effects section a bit confusing until you get the hang of it, but you can set up a series of 8 patches, send them to the amp and then they are there, each one with several variations that can be accessed from the panel.
Mine had "VERSION 3" emblazoned on the box, but a quick check showed it needed updating, which added four more effect models and further control options. Previous updates seem to have included bringing functionality that the higher end models have on the panel to the software options of the more basic models. Updating was easy. It seems this Amp may grow with time.
Few, if any, complaints. Yes a USB cable would be nice to be included. I think the only other issue is that I may have a few pedals which are now quite possibly obsolete.
Onto the Amp, Awesome piece of kit as it comes and i am sure it will be even more Amazing once i get a USB lead for ir (Type B) which was not included in the package but that is my only kind of gripe really :D
Buy it i say and if you are quick you may get it at the sale price which makes it even more of gem :)
