The Dreadbox Hypnosis Time Effects Processor is a standalone FX unit primarily designed for use with a synth, but flexible enough to be used with any instrument that has a 1/4-inch output. With a range of time-based effects for you to choose from, plus a genuine spring reverb tank, the Hypnosis will keep you occupied for hours and get your creative juices flowing.
Low Frequency Oscillation
Alongside the retro look, the Dreadbox Hypnosis has some serious depth, allowing you to create a wide variety of sounds using your instrument of choice. The Chorus-Flanger section is a time-based effect modulated by an LFO. Set the delay time up to 10ms and you will get the Flanger effect, anything beyond this results in a Chorus-type sound so whether you want to subtly enhance your synth sound or send it to the stratosphere with a shifting sonic structure you'll have a plethora of options to add to your sound. Setting the Feedback high with the Depth at zero gives you access to the 'Comb' Filter effect and if you press and hold the CHO-FLA button for one second you gain access to three different waveforms, Sine, Triangle and Random, allowing you to sculpt your sound even further.
The Delay section of the Dreadbox Hypnosis allows you to set a delay time between 40ms to 450ms, opening up a whole host of effects from weird and wacky to subtle and textured. Three delay modes allow you to utilise regular delay, 'bucket brigade' delay and tape style and when the Hypnosis is operating in Stereo mode you get a ping pong style delay. The option for infinite repeats is available if you set the feedback knob to the max, which combined with the freeze function makes for some distinct sound palette possibilities. Freezing the signal automatically sets the feedback to the max whilst any new incoming signal is not delayed and you can go hands-free by deactivating the delay effect whilst the freeze button is held down.
Analogue Spring Reverb
The Dreadbox Hypnosis has a three-spring, mono reverb tank for adding resonance to your base tone. Generated by the vibration of a metal coil held under tension, this mechanical effect adds a natural smoothness to your sound that ranges from understated texture to intense feedback depending on how you drive it. As with the other effects, the Reverb has three LFOs to choose from, Sine, Square and Random, giving you more options for tonal tinkering. With the reverb being a mechanical effect the tank will most likely pick up any vibrations so placing on the same surface as your speakers is not recommended unless the circle of feedback is what you're after from your sound.
The Dreadbox Hypnosis has plenty of scope for connecting devices various devices with its stereo inputs and outputs. You can connect synths, guitars, bass guitars, even microphones to the unit for effect processing. Input and Output levels allow you to control your levels alongside a bypass control for when you're tweaking and fine-tuning. The Programs section gives you access to 49 different presets, meaning you can store patches for your performances and recall them at a later date, great for those lengthy performances.
With its analogue effects and 80s Nostalgia styling, the Dreadbox Hypnosis Time Effects Processor is a stunning little unit that has tonnes of tonal variety and scope for sonic customisation. Whether you want to subtly alter your sound or take it to another dimension with an eccentric and unpredictable output, the Dreadbox Hypnosis allows you to craft sounds for your synth, guitar or voice with intuitive ease and beautiful analogue sonorousness.
