The new Electro Harmonix B9 Organ Machine turns your guitar - and/or keyboard - into a fully-fledged B-Series electric organ, opening up a world of sensational tones to play with. As you'd expect from EHX, the pedal is very easy to use and built to withstand the rigours of the road.
Intuitive control layout
The straightforward layout means that you'll very quickly get into the swing of things. There are two Volume knobs: the Dry volume knob controls the volume of the untreated instrument level at the Organ output, and the Organ volume knob controls the overall volume of the Organ preset. The two levels can be blended together - depending on what type of sound you're going for - to stunning effect. The Mod knob controls the speed of modulation, with the type of modulation being dependent on the selected preset. The Click knob controls the percussive click level, to simulate the percussion effect on vintage B3 and C3 organs. The click is only added to the very first note/chord played, and will only re-trigger when held notes have been released. This gives a truer representation of an organ's response, allowing you to sculpt the attack to suit your playing style.
The order of presets (1 to 9) is: Fat & Full, Jazz, Gospel, Classic Rock, Bottom End, Octaves, Cathedral, Continental, and Bell Organ. Each one has its own unique character, with its own accompanying style of modulation. Presets 1 through 6 have a rotating speaker effect with the speed of rotation controlled by the Mod control knob.
The “Fat & Full” preset adds an extra octave below and above to fill out your guitar sound with a huge swell. Switching to “Jazz” offers a smoother response of a B3 Hammond organ, with a touch of chorus. The “Gospel” preset matches the responsiveness of the upper octave drawbars to generate a true Church organ-style tone. “Classic Rock” gives a sweetly mellowed sound, which is closest in character to the style used in Procul Harum's "Whiter Shade of Pale". The “Bottom-End” preset fills out the low end for playing smooth basslines. “Octaves” using your root note and pair it with an octave above to create a wider sense of space. By adjusting the Click control whilst in the Octaves preset, this controls the key click as well as the higher harmonic response. From "Fat & Full" through "Octaves", the Modulation type is Chorus.
The “Cathedral” setting gives you all the power of a full-scale cathedral organ, whack up the reverb on your amp or FX pedal to really let your tone soar. Adjusting the Click knob results in an increased tremolo effects, offering a shimmering response. The “Continental” preset sings with vibrato to give you tones that are reminiscent of "House of the Rising Sun". The “Bell Organ” setting crosses an electric piano with an organ, whilst the Click knob controls the amount of bell or chime adding to the output.
Solid EHX construction
As with every Electro Harmonix product, the B9 Organ Machine is built in New York City, to a very high standard of quality. Each knob feels smooth and responds cleanly, whilst the EHX bypass circuitry prevents your dry signal from becoming coloured by unwanted noise. Latency is non-existent, so you can be sure that what you play is what you hear.
Whether you're looking to recreate some of Jon Lord's finest moments, take on the madness that is Iron Butterfly's "In A Gadda Da Vida" single-handedly, noodle away happily at home, or take your live tones to another level, then the B9 Organ Machine is the enigmatic little beauty to help you on your way. There is simply nothing else like it, and you won't be disappointed!
