The Electro Harmonix Deluxe Bass Big Muff PI Bass Guitar Effects Pedal delivers the coveted EHX Bass Big Muff Pi tonal power and intensity, but includes some welcome appointments that have been carefully selected to enable the creation of even bigger sounding bass distortion, with greater tone-shaping versatility.
The control layout is as intuitive as can be. At your fingertips is a selection of knobs that enable you to mould your signal with incredible precision, to get the exact level of overdrive you desire. The Volume pot operates the master volume level output, with an impressive ability to boost the input signal by a massive 14dB, giving you scope to create a huge entrance when the pedal is engaged, or a subtle introduction. The Blend pot allows you to create the perfect mix between the dry signal - the input - and the distorted signal, you can elect to go with more of the input, or crank it up with full distortion for a truly monstrous sound. The Tone pot controls a range of sounds from high treble to deep bass - on the distorted effect only. Use the tone filter frequencies to enhance your bass guitar timbre, emphasising low-end rumble right through to high-end clarity. As with the original Big Muff PI, the Sustain pot adjusts the amount of sustain and distortion.
The Gate knob attenuates the amplitude needed to open the noise gate. By turning the Gate knob clockwise, the louder the signal needs to be to open the Gate for the output to pass through. Therefore, you can ensure that dramatic staccato picking will be emphasised by preventing an 'always on' sound. Alternatively, if it's a fat, swelling, all-consuming rumble you're looking for, turn the knob down and disable the noise gate to unleash the full signal.
The Crossover footswitch turns the crossover circuit on and off. When the green status LED is lit, the crossover circuit is active and the High Pass Filter (HPF) and (LPF) knobs can be used to produce a plethora of different tones. When Crossover is engaged, HPF can be used to adjust the cutoff frequency range of the high pass filter from 125Hz to 1.75kHz. Likewise, the LPF knob adjusts the cutoff frequency range of the low pass filter from 60Hz to 10kHz. Depending on whether you want to focus the signal on specific frequencies ranges, you have all the tools you need to achieve the tone you want, with exceptional accuracy.
The input toggle switch engages 10dB of attenuation on the input to make the Deluxe Bass Big Muff friendlier to basses with active pickups. The bypass footswitch toggles between effect mode, and a high quality buffered bypass. When the red status LED is lit, the effect is active. When the LED is off, the Deluxe Bass Big Muff Pi is in bypass mode.
As you'd expect, all you need to do to connect to this beauty is plug your dry signal into the available input jack. When it comes to outputs, you have a choice of three, each with a specific purpose. The main output of the Deluxe Bass Big Muff Pi connects to the input of your amp or another effects pedal. The Direct Out connection provides a buffered output, allowing you to route your signal to an amplifier or separate effects chain. Finally, the DI Output - matches the output of the main output - is a low impedance output that allows you to plug directly into a mixing console, recording equipment, or a PA system. Theoretically, during a gig, you can send a signal to your backline amplifier, route a signal directly to the PA system for the sound engineer to use in a monitor mix and/or front of house (FOH) mix, as well as sending a feed to a separate chain of effects of your choice. The possibilities are enormous!
Whether you're an amateur or a professional, hitting the studio, stage or band rehearsal, the Electro Harmonix Deluxe Bass Big Muff PI bass guitar effects pedal should be at the top of your list of essential pedalboard items.
