The Electro Harmonix Riddle Q-Balls Envelope Filter Guitar Effects Pedal is perfect for adding a certain funkiness to your tone. The envelope filter has been fine-tuned to complement a guitar's frequency response beautifully. The onboard control layout gives you everything you need to shape and sculpt the envelope for true tonal expression.
The Envelope controlled filters enable you to modify the signal over a huge 80Hz to 5kHz range, with the intensity of the effect corresponding to the intensity of your playing dynamics. The volume and playing dynamics combine in the audio input to control the swept filter, matching and adapting in real-time.
Across the front panel, you'll find a range of controls. The Blend pot controls the output signal mix between the dry and effect signal. The Mode pot offers three filter modes: LP (low pass); BP (band pass) and HP (high pass), which focus on specific frequency bands.
The Attack pot allows you to dictate how rapidly the filter sweeps the frequency set between the Start and Stop pots. For a more percussive sound, set the Attack high, and for smoother sweeps go for a slower attack. The Decay pot controls how sensitively the reset circuit responds when switching between the Stop to the Start setting. On the lowest setting, a staccato effect results, whilst a longer decay creates a more lush and layered effect.
The Sensitivity pot controls the envelope filter circuit's sensitivity response to the instrument input (i.e. playing dynamics).
The Distortion footswitch engages the built-in analogue distortion circuitry Riddle, with a handy LED indicator that illuminates for rapid visual feedback. The intensity of the distortion corresponds with the Sensitivity setting. Within the pedal there is an additional pot that can be adjusted to fine tune the distortion volume level without affecting the gain or intensity of the distortion.
As well as the instrument input, there is an expression pedal input that allows an outboard expression pedal to control position along the filter sweep between the Start and Stop positions. The beauty is that you are afforded real-time expressive control for laying down to sweet wah-wah sounds that are unashamedly funky.
The Effect Out jack allows you to send a feed to your amplifier post-effect, whilst the Dry Out jack bypasses the effect and feeds through the input signal, which can be used to split the signal, used as a reference to send to a tuner pedal, or panned to another amp.
As with all EHX pedals, the Electro Harmonix Riddle Q-Balls Envelope Filter Guitar Effects Pedal is built like an absolute tank, and accepts 9V batteries or the supplied Electro-Harmonix 9.6DC-200BI power supply, so no matter what happens, you're good to go!
