For those who are unaware it always comes as a shock that the Explorer was first conceived in 1958. Less shocking is that the model was quickly picked up by players of metal and hard rock, who wanted an instrument more befitting of their relative genres. The striking design and sound of the instrument is still very much apparent in the Epiphone 1984 Explorer EX, which has also been updated with a pair of EMG pickups.
Distinctive Body Shape
You could be forgiven for thinking that the shape of the Epiphone 1984 Explorer EX would be awkward to play but the very opposite is true, as the instrument is light and perfectly balanced, making for a surprisingly comfortable playing experience. Also, being carved from a solid slab of mahogany, the guitar supplies subtle tonal nuances and sharp sustain. The distinctive shape and luscious Ebony finish are left to shine here as there is no pickguard to get in the way.
Ensuring excellent neck to body contact, a mahogany neck has been hand-fitted and glued into the body of the Epiphone 1984 Explorer EX. This has been carved to the SlimTaper D, this gives a flat surface and thin neck for ease of play and quick fretting. The rosewood fingerboard that lies atop has a 12-inch in radius measurement and offers 22 medium-jumbo frets and white dot inlays.
Making up the rest of the guitar’s 24.75” scale length is the classic combo of a LockTone Tune-o-matic bridge and StopBar tailpiece, which have long been known for providing exceptional sustain and steadfast intonation. Helping the mix, at the other end of the neck, is a set of Grover tuners with small metal buttons, which are situated at a headstock that is as distinctively-shaped as the body of the instrument.
Sheer Through any Mix
Where the Epiphone 1984 Explorer EX gets really interesting is in selection of higher output EMG pickups; with an EMG-81 in the bridge and an EMG-85 in the neck position.
The EMG-81 is absolutely designed for the leads, calling out to be played at high volume and pushing amps into overdrive. The EMG-85 harness two Alnico magnet-loaded coils to bloat out the low end and fatten highs. Together the duo create nothing less than brain-splitting awesomeness that will sheer through any mix with absolute ease.
