The Epiphone B.B. King Lucille electric guitar incorporates classic features that have been designed by the Blues’ legend himself. King's personal touches on this signature model include the TP-6 fine-tuner tailpiece, the semi-hollow body without the f-holes and, of course, the name on the headstock that has adorned his guitars throughout his career, 'Lucille'.
Sophisticated ES Style
B.B. King has always preferred to lush tones produced by the ES-style body – most notably the ES-335. The semi-hollow body shape is capable of producing incredibly complex tones, taking the sweet sounding character of the maple laminate tonewood, and enabling it to resonate freely to create a huge sound. However, King often found that due to his raw playing style, he would encounter unwanted feedback. In response to this Lucille has been built without f-holes, which aids in focusing the guitar’s output. The body has been treated to a stunning ebony finish, whilst binding skirts the body edges. The top of the body - along the lower bout beneath the pickups – is protected by a tortoiseshell coloured pickguard. The strings are held steadfast by the Epiphone LockTone tune-o-matic bridge, which works in partnership with a TP-6 fine-tuning Stopbar tailpiece – personally selected by King himself – to ensure precise intonation throughout each and every performance, no matter how much bend you put into each note.
The hand-set 24.75” hard maple neck is shaped to the SlimTaper “C” profile, making it both highly resonant and a joy to play. Paired with the neck is a rosewood fingerboard, carrying 22 medium-jumbo frets that are perfect for executing licks and phrases on. Pearloid block position inlays guide your way in style. At the top of the neck is a unique sloped-dovewing headstock, bearing a pearloid “Lucille” inlay, and Grover tuning machines to keep strings held tightly.
A pair of Epiphone Alnico Classic humbuckers, each one bearing a striking gold cover, produces the foundation of Lucille’s enigmatic tone. However, the core of King’s tonal versatility is shaped by the VariTone control, which is identical in principle to the vintage models that he uses on stage. The VariTone uses a six-way rotary switch with 5 tonal adjustments available, as well as a bypass option. In position 1 the bypass mode is enabled. As you rotate the switch through options 2 to 6, the tonal focus of each pickup is shifted to enable greater focus across the frequency spectrum – position 2 being the one favoured by King himself. Positions 5 and 6 have the effect of giving the pickups a single-coil flavour, without losing the warmth and control present in the humbucker’s design.
Further control is afforded via the independent volume and tone pots for each pickup, as well as a three-way pickup selector switch. Extracting sublime tones is very simple, but with the range of tonal offerings available, you will never be in short of options during your quest for the perfect tone. Lucille also offers a choice of outputs too, with a ¼” mono output (both pickups of neck pickup in stereo mode) and ¼” stereo (bridge pickup).
The Epiphone B.B. King Lucille electric guitar is a superb model that brings the unique character of King’s own favourite closer to guitarists than ever before. If you’re looking to capture some of the tonal magic of the Blues’ legend, then Epiphone have now made the prospect much more affordable, without sacrificing on build or tonal quality.
