The Epiphone Les Paul Express is a guitar that takes a Les Paul design, and shrinks it down to proportions that can be easily travelled with. The famous, single cutaway silhouette remains, in smaller form, with some other neat tweaks to make it smaller. It retains the classic character of the iconic Les Paul, however.
The Les Paul Express is constructed with a solid, slab mahogany body. This is a key element in Les Paul design, lending it warm, powerful tone. The smaller size of the Express has led to some differences from a typical Les Paul, however.
Here, the neck is a bolt-on design, made from maple. Shaped to a SlimTaper profile, this is finished with a rosewood fingerboard, complete with dot inlays. The scale length is a teeny 22”. This choice of wood adds a brighter tonal character to compensate for the lower tension in the strings that results from this lower scale length.
The two humbuckers are a more familiar sight. Here, an Epiphone 650R is fitted in the neck position, with a 700T at the bridge. These pickups are based around alnico magnets, and inspired by the original PAF humbuckers designed by Seth Lover in the ‘50s. Wired with a three-way selector switch and a master tone and volume control, there are plenty of tones available from warm, rich clean tones to a full-throated, Les Paul ‘roar’.
The bridge is a departure from more familiar Les Paul spec, too. A six-saddle, adjustable bridge is fitted, making any required ‘tweaks’ a straightforward process, with 14:1 die-cast tuners keeping tuning stable at the other end.
The compact, 3/4-sized design of the Epiphone Les Paul Express means that this is a great travel guitar. Don’t let its small size fool you, however- this little guitar has a very big voice…
