The Epiphone Les Paul Ultra-III is everything a classic Les Paul should be and more. Rather than complicating things by adding extra features which get in the way, or change the look, all the upgrades on the Ultra-III are subtle and seamless. In it's most basic application this is a great sounding Les Paul with Probucker I and II pickups give great, warm tone and a strong signal. Add to that a chromatic tuner on the bridge pickup mounting ring with an on/off switch that cuts out the signal while you tune, using 11 indicator LEDs to help you tune quickly. There is also a Shadow NanoMag active pickup system which gives an acoustic-like tone, capturing all the subtle body acoustics and string harmonics.
The real killer feature of this guitar is it's advanced signal routing. Plug in a jack to the main output, and press the NanoMag volume pot to toggle between the Probuckers, NanoMag pickup and both together (without any annoying pops or clicks); plug in an second jack into the stereo out and get a seperate signal for the Probuckers and the NanoMag simultaneously, so you can route the Probucker signal to your amp and the NanoMag signal to the PA or an acoustic amp for example; plug into your computer via USB, using the built-in interface and use with virtually any audio software, including Native Instruments Guitar Rig 4LE software (included) which offers live effects, amp simulation, recording, metronome, tuner and more.
With so much flexibilty it is hard to imagine that the core functionality of this guitar would not be compromised, but the Les Paul Ultra-III really has achieved it, offering a classic Les Paul aesthetic, sound and playability, but with seriously extended features. The body is solid mahogany, with a glued-in SlimTaper fast neck, a AAA flame maple veneer top and a rosewood fingerboard (the tonewood combination that helped put Gibson on the map). Tuning stability and sustain are improved by the Epiphone LockTone Tune-o-matic bridge and LockTone Stopbar tailpiece, and held by Grover 16:1 machine heads for very accurate tuning.
