A collaborative effort between Epiphone and Frank Iero of My Chemical Romance the Epiphone Wilshire Phantomatic melds together a collection of features you won't find in another guitar. With its flexibility and vintage styling that made it a favourite of some of the biggest names in rock (such as Jimi Hendrix, Steve Marriot, Paul Gilbert and Johnny Winter), this is one of Epiphone's most anticipated guitars.
All the design classics and materials are in place; the double cutaway design and neck profile making the Epiphone Wilshire Phantomatic great for crisp leads and beefy rhythm. The body is solid mahogany, as is the 24.75" scale '60s SlimTaper set-neck which features a rosewood fingerboard adorned with mother-of-pearl block inlays. To round off the guitars retro good looks is an Antique Ivory finish coupled with a black single-ply pickguard and Wilkinson vintage style tuners with green keys.
The partnership between Epiphone and Frank Iero and the years of development that have gone into creating the Epiphone Wilshire Phantomatic have not been wasted. The result is an astonishingly versatile guitar that brings you the sound of a dozen guitars from axe. An Alnico Classic Plus Humbucker has been set in the bridge position, while an Alnico Classic Humbucker is in the neck and to unlock the full potential of this pairing Epiphone have included a mono VariTone.
It's the inclusion of the VariTone that puts the Epiphone Wilshire Phantomatic into a whole other category of guitar. The VariTone's 6-way switch gives you 5 notch filters, with a bypass in position 1. Positions 2-6 give you a tonal-breadth unheard of in other guitars. Switching changes the frequency of the notch filter shifts from 1.9kHz to 130Hz. Positions 2-4 retain their clarity whilst giving you great tonal shaping, while positions 5-6 give the humbuckers a single-coil sound without the thin-sounding edge. With the 3-position toggle switch, and 6-position VariTone, the Epiphone Wilshire Phantomatic delivers a total of 18 tones!
To top off the electronics the Epiphone Wilshire Phantomatic has an extended range of staccato on/effects with the inclusion of a kill switch mounted to one of the horns and a master volume control mounted inline with the VariTone rotary switch.
