The Gallien-Krueger MB 210-II UL 2x10" 500-Watt Bass Combo Amplifier is a superb amplifier for gigging amateurs and pros alike. Packing an enormously powerful 500-Watt punch, you are offered a plethora of built-in features to make life much easier, as well as expandability so that the amp can grow in line with your needs and requirements. Truly, this little beauty is an incredible amp that should be at the top of every discerning bassist's shopping list.
500-Watts of Awesomeness
The MB 210-II features all digital circuitry to produce its robust 500-Watts, giving it the power to hold its own in any environment. Packing a pair of 10-inch speakers, you can easily take the MB 210-II along to your gig and throw out a powerful output. However, Gallien-Krueger went further and equipped this beast with some impressive options that opens up a whole new level of power.
Firstly, a poweramp output on the rear of the cabinet allows you to connect an external 8 Ohm speaker cabinet using a Speakon cable. Secondly, the Chain output enables an XLR cable to send all EQ and Volume settings directly to Gallien-Krueger MBP powered cabinets, giving you a fantastic stereo image, and greater throw when you play.
Front Panel Access
Easy access is given to every one of the many features built into this amp. With regard to connectivity, there is a single instrument input for your active or passive bass guitar. Towards the right of the panel there is a headphone output jack, which enables silent practise and helps to preserve relations with family, housemates, and neighbours. Next to this is a direct output for connection to a PA system using a mic cable – with a Pre/Post EQ switch that controls whether the signal is sent before or after it has run through the EQ section, and an Auxiliary input that allows you to connect a smartphone or other audio source. The great thing about this is that you can jam along to your favourite tracks to build up your chops, or add backing to a solo performance.
With regard to control over your tone, there is a range of controls that allow you to shape and mould your tone and output with remarkable precision. Whether you want to control dynamics, timbre, tonality, or simply get creative, GK has thought of everything so that you can let your imagination run wild.
Pad and Gain
Alongside the instrument input is a -10dB pad switch that reduces the input signal level to prevent clipping or unwanted distortion. Next to the pad switch is the Gain control pot (both of which can be used together to control amp headroom) that adjusts the preamp gain level. This can be used to boost weak signals, or introduce an overdriven vibe into your signal.
In order to prevent unwanted damaged occurring, the MB Series has built-in Smart Protection Circuitry. Should anything occur whilst you're playing, the blue light on the power switch will revert to red as a warning indicator. It is also worth noting that when you initially switch on the amp, the light will turn from red to blue, indicating when it is safe to start using the amp.
Four Band EQ
The MB 115-II benefits from a versatile four-band EQ, which controls: Bass, Lo-Mid, Hi-Mid, and Treble, enabling seamless attenuation over selected frequency bands. The Bass control enables a +10dB boost or cut around 60Hz to create a much fatter low-end energy or tighten things up for a controlled low-end pop. The Low-Mid control boosts and cuts around 250Hz by +6dB/-10dB, allowing you to accentuate the depth of clarity of your overall tone.
The Hi-Mid control boosts and cuts at the 1kHz range, which allows you to hone in on your lower string harmonics to deliver greater punch to your tone. The Treble control boosts and cuts at 7kHz, which allows you to soften the upper frequencies and remove high-end pop or definition - particularly useful for when you want to soften the response of your slapping technique.
Following the EQ controls, there is a Boost pot that allows post EQ gain to be introduced to create an aggressive edge to your signal. The Master Volume control then allows you to increase the overall signal output, which can be attenuated to balance out the amount of boost you inject into. The Limiter control works had to prevent your power amp from distorting, and is great for keeping things in check when you're using active pickups. The built-in Horn control activates the high frequency tweeter, giving an added dimension to the tonal response of your playing.
As well as this, GK has included their proprietary G.I.V.E. Technology, which stands for Gate Induced Valve Effect. GK has used field-effect devices with the gate biased to optimise harmonic content of your tone. G.I.V.E. works closely with the built-in four-band EQ to ensure exceptional performance.
