The Gibson ES series is a wide range of guitars that are built to stand the test of time. One of the most iconic models of this range is the ES-335 thanks to its legendary appearance and sound. So, the luthiers at Gibson Memphis have created a smaller version of this fantastic guitar in the form of the ES-339 Satin. Featuring the recognisable “F” cutaways in the body, the ES-339 has a sumptuous satin finish to complete the look of an incredibly well-designed guitar.
CLASSIC COMPACT BODY
Gibson take the classic body of the ES-335, and expertly downscales it to give you the ES-339. Like its big brother, the ES-339 Satin has many similar aesthetic features such as the familiar “F” cutaway holes which provide that semi-acoustic tone we know from a semi-hollow body. The body is reinforced by a maple centreblock and spruce bracing to ensure long-lasting durability.
Maple / Poplar / Maple 3-ply pieces of wood make up the construction of the top, back and rims of the ES-339 Satin. This allows the sound waves to resonate without restriction in the hollow air space of the guitar and out through the cutaway holes in the top. This produces a clean sound with plenty of sustain and reduces the possibility of generating any feedback.
Gibson have built the neck using mahogany tonewood and securely joined it to the body of the ES-339 via a traditional Mortise and Tenon joint. The neck dimensions have also been redesigned by Gibson to offer a stronger, more comfortable playing feel. The mahogany neck is built to a traditional “C” profile and is joined by an historic tubeless truss rod to improve the guitar’s resonance.
Attached to the neck is a 22-fret rosewood fingerboard decorated with small pearloid block inlays, helping you to make your way along the neck with complete confidence. The dot inlays also give the ES-339 Satin model a resemblance to the original, legendary ES-335 models of the 60s.
One of the most revered sounds in the world of electric guitars has to be that of the humbucker. Over the years Gibson have produced pickups that generate the PAF (Patent Applied For) tone which is still widely sought after to this day. The ES-339 Satin is fitted with Burstbucker 1 and 2 pickups which have historically unmatched coil windings which ensure you will get that vintage PAF / humbucker tone with utmost clarity.
The Volume and Tone controls have a traditional four-knob layout, allowing you to effortlessly contour your sound output to suit your playing needs.
HARDWARE AND FINISH
A sturdy, reliable ABR-1 bridge with titanium saddles is accompanied by a locking stop bar tailpiece, consequently enhancing the guitar’s sustain and tone.
The headstock is joined by Milk Bottle Grover Rotomatic tuners with die cast alloy keys and are set to an 18:01 ratio, giving you total accuracy whenever you need to retune the strings.
Gibson hand-spray the body of the guitar in a Semi Gloss 30 Sheen Lacquer to give it that sumptuous, satin finish. It’s really important that you keep a guitar in tip-top condition from the moment you purchase one, so to help do this Gibson supply a tan hard shell case to protect the ES-339 and include a Gibson Memphis Certificate of Authenticity to prove you are getting the genuine article.
