It’s safe to say that the Gibson J-45 Standard has to be one of the most popular acoustic models that this brand has created, and it has stood the test of time since its beginning in 1942. It is Gibson’s best-selling acoustic guitar of all time. The J-45 may be best known by its nickname, “The Workhorse”, and is the linchpin of the round-shoulder dreadnought range. With some new and updated features, the 2016 version of this classic model is sure to maintain its legendary status. As soon as you pick up and play a Gibson J-45, you’ll instantly recognise its beauty and potency combined.

Gibson are expert luthiers when it comes to selecting the best tonewoods to craft their guitars. The 2016 embodiment of the J-45 Standard is an example of this knowledge.

The body top is constructed using premium “AA” grade solid sitka spruce wood and has often served to be a popular top material. It produces chiming harmonics with sweet upper frequencies and has a dynamic response. It projects a full bodied sound with crystal clear accuracy, and you can be assured that the spruce wood will merely improve with age.

Mahogany tonewood has been used to construct the back and sides of the J-45 standard. Mahogany is well known for its warm, rich tones which combines beautifully with the solid sitka spruce top. The J-45 is also treated to radiused, scalloped bracing inside the body which give this guitar its energy and enhanced resonance when played.

Married to the guitar body via a compound dovetail joint is a single piece mahogany neck which has been given a SlimTaper profile to enable a faster playing style. The combination of the dovetail joint with the tonewood enhances the overall distribution of sonority through the guitar. To complete the neck is a rosewood fingerboard adorned with Mother of Pearl dot inlays and softened edges. The fingerboard is polished with finishing oil to enhance the natural compounds of the wood.

Further features on the 2016 J-45 Standard include the Grover Rotomatic tuners fitted to the headstock and a new engraved truss rod cover. The high gloss body finish is achieved by the use of a finer grit sandpaper and the top is decorated with a protective tortoiseshell pickguard beneath the soundhole. The guitar is engineered using cutting edge, hand finished German Plek technology for perfect playability.

The J-45 is fitted with the updated L.R. Baggs Element VTC pickup which does an amazing job of reproducing all the natural acoustic sounds through an amplifier. It is a simple piece of kit which has a subtle, under-saddle transducer design, it’s basically a matter of plug in and play and you will be stunned by its rich, amplified timbre.

Just when you thought that the J-45 Standard couldn’t get any better, you will be proven wrong! This 2016 version lives up to its legendary status and then some. The J-45 is supplied with a hardshell protective case and a Gibson owner’s manual for an all-round, excellent package which will not let you down.

Gibson J45 Standard
Posted on 16/10/2017 by robjn I purchased a Gibson j45 after playing a Martin for many years. I play finger style and for me the action was too high so had it adjusted, also before adjustment found the strings not very well balanced across the pickup so had the bridge adjusted at the same time. Took me a while to get used to it now its my No1 guitar.
Fantastic Guitar
Posted on 26/03/2016 by Stevefolk I have a Gibson J45 Standard and it is superb. Really superb. The action is not too high, but I play finger-picking style, so I had the action lowered by a professional luthier. Generally, guitars set up in the 'factory' are slightly high in action, to avoid any buzz by those who like to thrash the strings! My advice is to always have a professional set up done after buying a brand new guitar.
The best guitar I've ever had
Posted on 06/11/2015 by ihobbs11 I got my new 2016 Gibson J45 Stranded unpacked it and tuned it. Then fell in love with it. This guitar sounds wonderful and the action is great. I played my J45 for hours after it came. Please don’t listen to people that state online that this guitar has very high action and is hard to play. The acting is very kind on your fingers, to sum up this guitar gets 10 out of 10 from me, sounds wonderful and has an easy to play action.
