The iconic, mighty rock guitar is back for 2017, introducing the Gibson Explorer Traditional. Ever since the late 1950s, this asymmetrical-shape guitar has been highly regarded as one of the most unique models around. For many famous musicians, the Explorer is the rock guitar of choice, from The Edge of U2 to Dave Grohl of Foo Fighters. The updated 2017 model is a beast, offering playing comfort, agility and of course an aggressive sound.
The 2017 Explorer Traditional stays true to its name and form, maintaining that unmistakable angled, asymmetrical body. Gibson have hand-selected the historic mahogany tonewood for its solid-body build. This solid yet lightweight construction is what contributes to the rich Gibson Explorer sound and quality.
A set mahogany neck is firmly joined to the body of the Explorer via the traditional Mortis and Tenon joint, using the incredibly durable Franklin Titebond 50 adhesive. The neck has a very fast, Slim Taper profile, facilitated further by the shape of the body thus allowing for easy reach to the upper registers of the neck.
Topping the neck is an even thicker bound rosewood fingerboard, offering 22 frets for you to explore. By employing thicker rosewood it contributes to the guitar's tonal depth, while the Slim Taper profile feels comfortable in your hand. The neck also features a Tektoid nut which lubricates itself, consequently improving sustain and ensuring accuracy when returning to pitch.
The Explorer Traditional fast neck is given the PLEK treatment, a procedure that precisely levels each fret for the best possible playing feel.
The Explorer is known for its ability to rock, and this is all down to its high-gain humbucker pickups. In the neck position is a 496R pickup, accompanied by a 496T in the bridge. This hot, ceramic humbucker pairing give the 2017 Explorer Traditional a very gutsy world of varying tones with plenty of force and articulation. These humbuckers are well-known for offering an intricate midrange, dense low ends and singing highs.
Gibson have included two Volume controls plus a Master Tone knob joined by a 3-way toggle pickup switch.
