The Firebird was born of an age where Gibson were crafting their own range of solidbody guitars. The Firebird was designed alongside car designer Ray Dietrich, as such the iconic shape of the guitar draws influence from car tailfins often seen throughout the 1950s. The Gibson Firebird has been the guitar of choice for many incredibly famous musicians over the years, from Dave Grohl to Joe Perry, and the 2017 interpretation pays homage to its predecessors.
The 2017 Firebird Studio Traditional has the same, classic body shape with the longer right-hand horn, giving it that "reverse" appearance. The solid body is constructed from hand-picked mahogany, which has often been a significant tonewood in Gibson guitars. The Firebird has a solid body that feels incredibly lightweight, making it really easy to throw around on stage in those enthusiastic live performances.
The Firebird was one of the first Gibson guitars to use a neck-through construction. Using the traditional Mortis and Tenon neck joint, Gibson have firmly joined a mahogany neck using the time-tested Franklin Titebond 50 adhesive. The neck is given the fast, comfortable Slim Taper profile which is excellent for any modern player.
Aboard the neck is a thicker rosewood fingerboard with 22 frets at your disposal. The use of thicker rosewood boosts the depth of tone produced by the guitar for a high quality sound. Gibson have included a Tektoid nut that is self-lubricating for a better return to pitch and improved sustain.
The engines that power the sound of the 2017 Firebird are the 496R and 496T humbucker pickups. This hot, high-gain pairing features a 496R in the bridge position and a 496T in the neck position, providing its unmistakably aggressive sound. These humbuckers are well-known for offering an intricate midrange, thick lows and singing highs.
The Firebird retains the simple Gibson controls for rhythm and lead Volume and Tone, accompanied by a 3-way pickup toggle switch. Each control has a black tophat with a silver insert, complementing the body finish.
