The Gibson Hummingbird Pro EC Electro-Acoustic Guitar is the latest version of a model that has seen more than its fair share of music history, with the original breaking the folk scene in the late ‘50s/’60s. At the time the company was particularly well-known for its round-shouldered offerings, this 16 1/4”-wide behemoth readdressed the balanced, and was quickly accepted and loved.
Since then the model has continued to gain traction and is now one of the most popular acoustic amongst singer-song writers of various genres, with something to offer players of country, rock, blues and folk. Plugged-in or played acoustically, you can’t help to be heard wielding this monster.
The Gibson Hummingbird Pro EC Electro-Acoustic Guitar has of course been updated to match the demands of today’s players but the make-up and heart of the instrument have stayed true to the original 1960s model.
A legendary combination in acoustic guitar construction, the Gibson Hummingbird Pro EC Electro-Acoustic Guitar utilises solid Sitka spruce for its top, while solid mahogany is used in the construction of the back and sides. The top here also benefits from an advanced X-brace made of scalloped spruce and is finished with a gorgeous, hand-sprayed Vintage Sunburst nitrocellulose lacquer. This version of the model also has a cutaway at the lower bout of the body; giving players unrestricted access to the upper frets.
There are plenty of finishing touches evident here also, with a multi-ply binding, traditional double ring soundhole rosette, and custom line tortoiseshell pickguard at the top, while a marquetry stripe and single-ply binding take up residence at the back.
Making up the 25 ½” Scale Length
In the same vein as the body, the neck and headstock of the Gibson Hummingbird Pro Acoustic Guitar have been crafted with the same traditions as the ‘60s model. A quarter-sawn, one-piece mahogany neck joins the body at the 14th fret via a compound dovetail joint and hide glue.
This has been shaped to the round, 60’s Thin Line profile and then topped with an Indian rosewood fingerboard, giving an excellent playing feel. The fingerboard offers 21-frets and mother of pearl split-parallelogram inlays and a radial measurement of 12-inches. Giving an increase in resonance and sustain to the instrument is a 17-degree back-angled Traditional CF-100 headstock.
Reproducing the natural tone of the Gibson Hummingbird Pro EC Electro-Acoustic Guitar through an amplifier or P.A system is the active Fishman Prefix Plus-T pickup system. Also included with the guitar is a Gibson hardcase with blue plush lining.
