The Ibanez GRG170DX electric guitar plays and sounds like a dream, yet comes in at a price that everyone can take advantage of. Ibanez have a worthy reputation for building incredible instruments - just ask Steve Vai, Tosin Abasi or Meshuggah - and they put just as much effort into their production line models as they do their artist signature series. The GRG170DX benefits their expertise and is perfect for those who're looking for a shred-friendly machine.

The GRG170DX body has been crafted to sit as snugly as possible, with ergonomically designed curves that allow it to rest close to your body. The weight distribution across the body - and neck - is close to perfect, allowing you to concentrate on playing instead of wrestling to get it back into position. The body is built using basswood, a lightweight yet tonally balanced tonewood that has a forceful mid range energy. Finished in a cool black knight finish, this model is built to look as awesome as it sounds.

Fitted to the body is a bolt-on maple neck that has been shaped to the lightning fast GRG1 profile, enabling you to navigate its playing surface at incredible speed. Married to the neck is a bound rosewood fingerboard, which is home to 24 medium-sized frets, adorned with stylish sharktooth inlays. The double-cutaway shape makes it very easy to reach the upper regions of the fingerboard, so laying down ludicrous sweeping patterns - with or without some deft tapping thrown in, your choice - is comfortable to do.

The GRG170DX is armed with two humbuckers, and one single-coil pick up for extended tonal range. The humbuckers offer tonnes of gain in both positions, and the single-coil is great for clean tones and with the true duo selector system, this is an unbelievably versatile guitar. Rock and metal players will immediately fall in love with this setup, the tonal versatility of this system opens the door for players of other genres to get involved. Delivering sophisticated cleans, fat mids, and snarling highs that are suited to any and every genre of music you could imagine, who wouldn't want to give this a go?

The Fat 10 bridge offers fantastic stability, allowing you to divebomb or scream (or simply add subtle vibrato if that's more your thing). The tuning machines faithfully uphold your tuning with absolute precision, so that no matter how frenetic your performance may get, each and every string will remain true.

Posted on 04/12/2019 by I've had this guitar for 12 years (if not this exact model then very similar) and it's still going strong. Eminently playable, reliable electronics with a genuinely useful volume and tone knob, a wide variety of tonal possibilities with the HSH setup, with comfortable weight and contours. In 12 years the only work I've done to it is blocking the trem (since then it's much better at staying in tune), a fret leveling to get rid of minor buzz in one spot, and replacement of the pickup selector switch plastic knob.

My only criticism would apply to most Ibanez guitars, and be considered a benefit by many people: that the volume knob and pickup switch are very far forward, making it easy to bump either during strumming.

I'm almost annoyed at how high the quality is, because I have more money now and would like an excuse to indulge in a more expensive instrument, but I just can't! I'm only a recreational player and this axe does it all as far as I'm concerned.
