Korg, founded in 1963 has long prided itself on innovation with many world firsts. The Korg Volca Nubass is the first analogue synth to use a Nutube new-generation vacuum tube. The Korg Volca Nubass is a small package with big potential. Using the Vacuum Tube Oscillator, Korg are looking to create powerful analogue driven acid bass lines for an ever-growing electronic dance market. This portable unit is bursting with the kinds of features any dance musician or producer could need from an analogue synthesiser and sequencer.
Vaccuum Tube Technology
The first and most striking thing about the Korg Volca Nubass is the glowing blue valve sitting on the front of the unit. This is the heart of the machine, giving the warm tones and powerful overdrive only a tube can. Along with the transistor ladder filter, the Korg Volca Nubass fuses classic tube design with modern electronics to create strong acid bass lines. the Nutube is two tubes, one powering the main oscillator to create a sawtooth or square wave and the other is used to in the drive circuit of the sub oscillator to add depth and warmth to its sonic landscape. The transistor ladder found in some of the most well known analogue synthesisers adds a dynamic range that travels beyond the bright to dark sound and takes it from acid house to techno with the multitude of timbral possibilities
16 Step Sequencer
with the built-in 16 step sequencer, the Korg Volca Nubass allows you to either step programme the sequence or play the buttons as a keyboard for real-time recording. You can record the motion of the rotary knobs and store both motion and sequence in the internal memory for later use. The Korg Volca Nubass allows you to edit steps on the fly for a more dynamic performance offering a vast array of possibilities. The 16 step sequencer has 3 functions to create more expressive lines, Transpose, Accent and Slide. Transpose will play notes one or two octaves higher creating a more interesting line while remaining in the same scale. Accent adds emphasis to a chosen note to create more dynamic bass melodies. Slide which is indispensable to acid house bass lines creates a smooth transition between notes. There is also a randomise function that applies to all three settings which can be set to exponentially randomise on each pass creating ever varying sonic sculptures.
The Korg Volca Nubass can be connected to other Volca machines to add even more options to the sequencer. The unit is very light and battery powered with an in-built speaker for complete portability. The Korg Volca Nubass comes bundled with a wide array of software including Reason lite for home recording, Izoptope allowing you to create and master your music. Skoove for helping to improve your keyboard skills and a number of software synths from Korg and other brands. The Korg Volca Nubass is a small form analogue synthesiser with a big attitude and low price tag. This would compliment any dance music studio or be a great starting point for someone just starting out in the world o EDM.
