Christian Frederick Martin moved to America after a long and tiresome dispute between two warring guilds. The German Violin makers asserted that cabinet makers were not skilled enough to produce musical instruments, the German cabinet makers guild of which CF Martin and formerly his Father George Martin were part of asserted that they had not only discovered the guitar but where in fact the premier makers of guitars in Germany. The German Cabinet makers guild won the day but lost Christian to the calmer and more prosperous shores across the Atlantic.
Now some 175 years later and Martin is the byword for acoustic quality. The Martin family still run the company with C F Martin IV at the helm. Famed for the highly resonant, big volume dreadnoughts they have shaped and inspired the sound of generations of musicians and music we love. From Johnny Cash and Willie Nelson to Ed Sheeran and Ben Howard, the Martin Guitar has featured in popular music in some form. The sparkling bright shimmer of the D-28, D-28 and D-42s has been a mainstay in acoustic guitar playing for generations.
A Classic Re-imagined
The D42 sports a Sitka Spruce forward-shifted X-Brace fully supports the exquisitely crafted Sitka Spruce top. Sitka Spruce is a strong tonewood providing very bright tones but with an even response. The Back and sides are made from Indian Rosewood providing some balance to the Spruce top. The construction of the body allied to the prefect radius of the soundhole gives a crisp, bright and loud acoustic sound. The Ageing Toner top adds a slight tint to the beautiful natural Spruce grain.
The neck is made from solid Mahogany with an Ebony fingerboard. The Mahogany is a sturdy immovable wood that will stand the test of time. Ebony as a fretboard wood is very tight and responsive giving a very smooth playing feel. The neck is a modified low oval shape for the most comfortable playing style possible with a high-performance taper for the freest possible movement from low to high register frets.
The combination of tonewoods for both body and neck construction serves not just the immediate purpose of sounding amazing but there is a long game in mind. Spruce, Rosewood, Mahogany and Ebony are all woods that respond to their environment. These woods will evolve with your playing, your learning and ultimately your treatment of them. You will notice over time a lower register resonance helping to fill the sound a little more over time.
The D42 is one of the most beautifully decorated acoustic guitars ever made. The Abalone binding encompasses the whole perimeter. The faux tortoiseshell pickguard is both environmentally correct and exquisite looking. The white binding extends to the fretboard and headstock. There are two abalone inlays in the rosewood bridge and Abalone dots within the bridge pins. The D42 is an immaculate instrument with elegant flourishes throughout. The fret inlays are Abalone in the Martin snowflake style adding another highly decorative touch to an already beautiful guitar.
A guitar for the ages
The justification for such high-end guitars is not in the construction or decoration but in the combination of these factors. How the D42 sounds married to a desire to constantly want to be playing or writing is the essence of this instrument. This guitar will instil a desire to be used and help create the next generation of songs and songwriters. There are 175 years of experience in every corner of this quite stunning machine, there is also a musical heritage and rarefied place among some of the best instruments available to man. Shaping the future has never been more beautiful.
