Double Basses

The Double Bass is the largest and lowest of all the orchestral instruments, providing the rumbling low end of the orchestra. Similar in structure to the Cello, the Double Bass is featured in concertos, solos and chamber music. It also appears in Jazz, 50s style Blues, rock and roll, traditional country, and many other forms of music. It is played either with a bow, or by plucking the strings and playing styles vary depending on the genre.

The construction of the Double Bass is very similar to that of the Violin, they share a similar body shape, sound holes and bridge construction to allow bowing of individual strings. However, one major difference is the depth, with the Double Bass requiring a much greater size to ensure a big voice when playing the low notes. There is little standardisation with the Double Bass, unlike the Violin, which means the Double Basses can often look very different to one another.

At Dawsons Music & Sound we have a wide range of Double Basses to suit all needs. Whether you’re buying for the first time or looking to upgrade to something more professional, we’ve got all the big brands, with Stentor, Harlequin, Andreas Zeller and many more all calling us home.
