The Pioneer RMX-500 Remix Station is the latest addition the RMX line. This range is aimed specifically at DJs or producers who need the ability to ‘remix’ and drastically manipulate music on the fly. This, the second model to be released, provides the same superb effects quality, in a more affordable package- but one with some new twists all its own…
Intuitive Control Layout
The RMX-500 maintains a familiar arrangement of controls, using rings of buttons around parameter control knobs. Here, however, there are two of these. The left controls Rhythm FX, whilst the right controls Scene FX. In the centre are Release FX controls.
Rhythm FX cuts up the music during playback, and allows the DJ to add onboard drum samples to the mix. Kick, Snare, Clap, Hi-Hat and Cymbal sounds are included, with five performance variations, along with an overdub mode with which DJs can create their own beats.
Scene FX are aimed at giving DJs the tools to create their own build-up or break-down, using FX. These include two variations each of modulation, echo, spiral up, reverb up, and four variations of noise effects in the ‘Build-Up’ section, and two variations each of Hi-Pass filter, Lo-Pass filter, Zip, Spiral down, and Reverb Down in the Break Down section.
The manner in which these are implemented provides one of the RMX-500’s truly unique features. Each of the control knobs can be twisted either way to change effects parameters, but by pressing the knob down, sub-parameters can be changed. Yup, the two knobs are pressure sensitive. Aside from providing a neat new way of manipulating the input signal, this also enables easy one-handed performance.
The release FX section is aimed at providing an easy means to exit from complex FX combinations. These comprise backspins, brakes and echo effects, enabling the DJ to ‘exit’ from other effects smoothly.
The RMX-500’s ability to integrate into a set-up is equally impressive. It analyses BPM, and quantises FX accordingly. Plus, it can be used as a MIDI controller. It also has a built-in audio interface (via USB) and will integrate within a software DAW environment via a VST/AU/RTAS plug-in. The unit’s compact footprint ensures that it fits neatly into any studio or DJ situation.
The Pioneer RMX-500 Remix Station is a beautifully designed, expressive and crucially, great sounding effects unit that has the power to revolutionise your performances.
