The Roland FA-08 is a product that many players have waited patiently for, furthering its concept of the powerful, synthesizer workstation. Picking up the baton from the from the highly acclaimed Fantom, it provides the same extraordinary power as a standalone performance, and music creation tool, but does so with Roland’s cutting-edge technologies.
However, it adds in all-new features aimed at integration with a modern DAW, such as a built-in audio interface, the ability to be set up as a controller easily, and the capability for tracks created to be exported for easy use within software. All of this is packaged within a unit that is lightweight (16kg), but equipped with an excellent, 88-note, Ivory Feel-G fully weighted keyboard.
Over 2000 stunning sounds, with room for expansion
Ultimately, any workstation is only as good as the palette of sounds it can draw upon. The FA-08 is well furnished, in this regard. With over 2000 onboard sounds derived from the colossal sound banks of the Integra-7 module, it has acoustic and synthetic sounds for every musical situation.
The unit incorporates Roland’s flagship SuperNATURAL sound technology. This uses clever techniques that remove the sonic ‘artefacts’ that plague most sample-based synths. For example, obvious sample switching is a thing of the past. Plus, authentic audio detail is included on acoustic sounds, such as sympathetic resonance on piano sounds. The result is stunningly authentic acoustic sounds, and expressive synth sounds and drums. The FA-08 is loaded with a selection of SuperNATURAL acoustic, synth and drum sounds.
Sounds can also be expanded via internal wave expansion slots, plus Integra-7 sounds can be downloaded from Roland’s superb, Axial online library.
Onboard 16-track sequencer and versatile export
No workstation worth its salt would be complete without an onboard sequencer. Here, a powerful 16-track MIDI sequencer is equipped, easily operable thanks to the large, full-colour LED screen.
This alone makes the FA-08 a powerful, standalone music creation tool. However, it provides a sampler based on the popular SP404sx sampler, which allows for easy sampling of sounds phrase and loops, plus a non-stop looper, which makes it easy to grab moments of inspiration, and expand them into full tracks.
In addition, sequencer tracks can be exported to stereo audio files or, very neatly, multi-track audio files for use in DAW software, via the SDHC slot.
The combination of powerful sequencer, flexible sampler with 16-trigger pads and versatile export options cements the FA-08’s dual strengths within live scenarios and the studio.
The workstation to integrate perfectly with your studio
It is clear that since it last released a synth workstation, Roland has spent a considerable amount of time considering how the modern player would use an instrument of this kind, and tailored its feature set accordingly. This is most apparent with the DAW integration features.
The Roland FA-08 is equipped with an inbuilt audio and MIDI interface, making it incredibly easy to use within a computer-based studio. This USB connection provides a simple means of connecting to DAW software, and a microphone and guitar input allows input to a host computer, or to the onboard sampler. The unit can be switched to a configured DAW mode, with a single button press. With a superb weighted keyboard, rotary controls, and sixteen trigger pads, this is a great controller in its own right.
The inclusion of 16 effects engines (for each of its sixteen sequencer tracks), plus reverb, chorus, EQ and dedicated drum processors makes adding a final sheen to sounds or tracks produced on the unit itself.
The lightweight design, superb keyboard action and array of excellent sounds make the Roland FA-08 a dream instrument for gigging performers. The powerful sequencing features, and seamless integration with DAW software, the player who splits his time between performing and composing may well find everything they have been looking for here, in a single, powerful instrument.
