If you're looking for the perfect communicator between your computer and outboard electronic instruments (i.e. synths, drum machines, sound modules), then the Roland SBX-1 Sync Box is an absolute must-have. Equipped with the ability to support a wide range of analog and digital using DIN SYNC, MIDI and USB, with the capability for any to be designated as the master clock source. The SBX-1 can be used independently as a master sync to maintain uniform control across all external devices thanks to its internal clock, giving tactile control over timing, groove, as well as further support for CV/GATE signals.

Whether you're performing live in front of an audience, or recording tracks in the studio, it is imperative that your gear runs smoothly, and in perfect harmony. The SBX-1 guarantees that everything connected to it is accurately controlled with the utmost precision. The intuitive interface makes life very simple, allowing you to make light work over the connections available. The Clock Source button allows you to quickly switch through D-SYNC/MIDI/USB/Internal, with a clear LED that indicates which option is selected.

Add Some Swing

The display panel clearly indicates the BPM, whilst the Tempo and Fine Tempo knobs give you intricate control over the BPM. You can either go ahead with a straight clock pulse, or use the Shuffle button to add variable swing to external sequencer/rhythm and drum machine generated patterns, whether they are equipped with a shuffle function or not - including the TR-808 and TB-303. You have the option to select 8th and 16th note swing, then correct quantization errors with the Sync button. The Shuffle and Sync buttons are a live performers dream by polishing up errors before they even appear, allowing you to focus solely on putting on a great show.

Powerful Signal Processing

The SBX-1 handles incoming sync information by converting the signal into both CV (pitch) and GATE (note) signals, which enables it to handle analog or modular synths. Information received from Low Frequency Oscillators (LFOs) can be modulated, and even used as trigger signals by the SBX-1 - supporting a range from quarter notes to 32nd notes, including triplets and dotted 8th notes. Implementing your AIRA gear - TR-8, TB-3, SYSTEM-1 - into your studio and live setup alongside your vintage synth treasures is simplified, allowing you to get truly creative.

The CV/GATE output jacks allow you to control analog and modular synths from your external MIDI device or computer. It does this by using MIDI notes and CC information from external sources, which are then converted and output as CV/GATE information, simple yet outrageously powerful. If you want to be able to use LFO signals as CV signals - up to 5 types (3 using AUX) of different LFO settings output along 3 simultaneous channels (CV/BEND/AUX) - and use MIDI notes as triggers and output these as GATE signals simultaneously from 3 channels (CV/GATE/AUX), then the SBX-1 has you covered. Triggers can be quantized from quarter notes to 32nd notes - including triplets and dotted 8th notes - giving your musical dexterity more than enough freedom. The AUX jack has been optimised for the TR-8 Rhythm Performer, increasing performance time in order to ensure that checking values on the SBX-1 display is a smooth as possible.

If you're looking for an easy way to connect all of your analog and digital electronic instruments together, get a computer involved, and have everything synced up perfectly, then the Roland SBX-1 Sync Box should be at the top of your shopping list. That alone should be reason enough to grab one. But the fact that you have such incredible depth of control over tempo on a musical level, alongside the ability to create triggers from incoming signals to influence other devices, is quite simply amazing. Expect to see the SBX-1 on many a pro DJ/artist's equipment list.
