The SE Electronics sE4400a is a dual diaphragm, multi-pattern condenser microphone with a feature set to make it a great option for all manner of audio situations. It has been designed around a slim, small chassis with flat sides. There are good reasons for this. The compact footprint, and flat ‘face’ means that the microphone can be positioned easily in small spaces, and can be placed very close to sources, thanks to its flat ‘front’.
At the heart of the microphone is a dual diaphragm capsule, based on that used in the original, award-winning sE2200a. The dual diaphragm arrangement enables the sE4400a operate with a number of different polar patterns. Cardioid, Hypercardioid, Figure of 8 and Omni-directional modes are available. The choice on offer here makes it suitable for all manner of situations, from recording vocals, to guitars, amps, pianos, percussion, overheads, and just about anything else you may come across.
Unlike many microphones, the sE4400a’s capsule is had made, then individually tuned. The resulting character is one of open, spacious high frequencies, warm lows and detailed mid-frequencies, matched by low self-noise and exceptional dynamics.
The flexibility provided by the multiple patterns is matched by additional switching options. A two-mode low frequency cut provides the ability to shelve low frequencies at 60Hz and 120Hz- perfect for removing low-end rumbles.
In addition, a pad switch is fitted, with 10dB and 20dB modes. As a result, the microphone is capable or recording even the loudest sources (a Max SPL for 0.5% [email protected]: of 130dB makes doubly sure of this).
Even the sE4400a’s finish has been subject to obsessive attention to detail. A unique, matt-black, rubberised finish covers the microphone. This makes the microphone less noticeable in live situations, and reduces reflections from lighting too.
The sE4400a is packaged with both a flight case and shock mount. The shock mount has also been subject to innovation too. Here, the microphone can be pushed forward on a hinge mechanism so that it sits outside of the mount’s cradle. This enables it to be placed close to audio sources, whilst still within the mount. Clever stuff.
The SE Electronics sE4400a is an astonishingly versatile microphone, with great sound, and numerous innovative design touches, making it a worthy addition to any microphone collection.
