The Squier J Mascis Jazzmaster Electric Guitar in Vintage White is a worthy tribute to alt-rock supremo and Dinosaur Jr. founder J Mascis, providing sublime detailing with a mighty sonic output and gig-ready performance. Everything across the model from the pickups and hardware to the finish has been selected by the man himself, and he has given his seal of approval with his signature adorning the rear each model's headstock.
Classic Jazzmaster design
The Jazzmaster was designed to replace the Stratocaster as Fender's flagship model. Featuring a unique offset waist design, the Jazzmaster targeted players who performed in ensembles by allowing them to play seated or standing with the same balance and comfort. The mellower output of the pickups combined with the highly versatile switching system to establish a wide-ranging tonal arsenal. Although Jazz purists weren't keen to take up the Jazzmaster, many rock 'n' roll and surf guitarists were, which gave credence to the Jazzmaster's status as the fringe guitarist's model of choice. What better model for an alt-icon such as J Mascis?
Though he confessed to wanting a Strat after turning away from the drums, J Mascis bought a Jazzmaster as it was the most affordable to him at the time. The songwriting partnership between the Dinosaur Jr. frontman and his Jazzmaster is prolific to say the least, having aided him in penning much of the band's material, as well as his solo efforts.
The body of the J Mascis Jazzmaster is built using basswood, a tonally balanced tonewood that is capable of chunky lows, thumping mids, and crisp highs. The pair of single-coil Jazzmaster pickups are perfectly appointed to make the most the tonewoods versatility, with an elaborate switching system that pushes the tone-shaping capabilities further. The dual-circuit design offers "lead" and "rhythm" options with independent volume and tone controls for each, with a 3-position pickup selector toggle switch for accessing pickups individually or in tandem. Whether you're deftly picking out single-notes, strumming open chords, chopping through power chords or performing blistering solos, the Jazzmaster can do it all with crisp precision.
Fitted to the body of the J Mascis Jazzmaster is a sturdy maple neck, which is shaped to the "C"-shape profile that creates a substantial feel in the hand. The gloss urethane finish allows your hand to glide along the generous 25.5-inch scale length with ease. Paired with the neck is a luxurious Indian Laurel fingerboard, which is home to 21 frets that are lavished with pearloid dot position inlays. The combination of jumbo frets and consistent string tension across the neck affords an enjoyable playground for your fingers to explore.
The headstock is home to vintage-style tuning machines, which uphold tuning integrity with dutiful precision. The body is home to the adjusto-matic bridge with vintage-style "floating" tremolo tailpiece, offering smooth vibrato control for unwaveringly cool performance. The gold anodized aluminium pickguard complements the vintage-white body finish beautifully, whilst the aged white plastic control knobs and switch tip enhance the aesthetic.
