It's a testament to John Petrucci’s unwavering dedication to guitar that has helped him maintain such a high level of credibility in the often competitive world of shred metal guitarists. Often ranked among the greatest in guitar magazines readers polls he has managed to strike a fine balance between critical and public acclaim while still staying true to his heavy, super quick guitar roots. The Majesty, Petrucci’s signature model reflects that ethic. A combination of the energy of a mustang (The Horse) and the efficiency of a German sports car the Majesty forges the natural and technological together into a metal symbiote.
The sleek and clever design is most noticeable with the carbon coloured maple top. The Music Man team figured a way to add the metallic look of carbon on a maple top that sits atop the mahogany centre. The construction of the Majesty is as complex as it is ingenious. The neck through to the bridge is three-piece mahogany, the pickups are mounted directly into the wood for that wide fat tone. The body sides are the lighter basswood and help to temper the dominance of the mahogany tones. The combination of these tonewoods creates a perfectly balanced tone machine that can produce very heavy guitar while still being lightweight. The mixture of tonewoods means that those searing leads still cut through. You only have to listen to Petrucci to hear the range of tones capable from the Majesty. He only uses this guitar live for all his sounds.
The neck of the Majesty has remained unchanged for Petrucci’s entire tenure as a signatory at Music Man. The 25.5" scale length and 16" radius is larger than most non-Les Paul type guitars but the extra size adds a new dimension to playing with room for strong vibrato and quick high register runs. The higher end frets are very accessible with a deep cutaway meaning you can get to the 24th fret with ease. The Rosewood fretboard is a softer wood than maple and provides warmer tones good for heavy rhythm and has amazing sustain. Rosewood matures well and is hardy enough to last for years even under intense scrutiny
The Music Man made pickups are mounted directly into the Mahogany centre. They are high energy, high output pickups ideal for heavy playing and searing leads. The Majesty has a Modern Tremolo system which allows you to do the big dives and swoops without the clumsiness of a floating tremolo system. The aesthetic is maintained with the chrome hardware including Music Man locking tuners for the highest level of tuning stability and accuracy. There are volume and tone pots with a "push-push" 12 Db boost to help you cut through when needed.
John Petrucci and Music Man have managed to do something new in a saturated market, by mixing both design and construction ingenuity with classic understanding of tonewoods they have managed to elevate the possibilities of what a guitar can be and how it can be accomplished. The interesting choice of tonewoods and how they are applied have created a perfect metal guitar. The Mahogany neck though to body helps to maintain a connection between the player and the electronics in the Majesty. The guitar is a furlong ahead in the race, a thoroughbred among stallions and worth every penny.
