The story behind the Sterling by Music Man SUB AX4 Electric Guitar started in the hands of legendary guitarist, Eddie Van Halen, in the 1990s when Music Man crafted a signature model for the artist, the EVH Signature. This model is still available as the Music Man Axis, and the SUB AX4 is its more affordable brother, giving you great playability at a wallet-friendly price.
Classic Design Made Affordable
The same great design from the Axis model is available right here, with the curvaceous body shape in residence. This is not just a great-looking design, however, as the single-cutaway gives you unrestricted access to the upper frets. The wood from which the body is crafted is not run-of-the-mill either, as the Sterling by Music Man SUB AX4 Electric Guitar uses jabon. Although still a hardwood, this wood type it heavier than the usual basswood, giving a sturdier feel. It also has an improved resonance over basswood, which translates into a better tone.
Although it may not seem to be at first glance, this is a solid-bodied guitar. The top here is not made of wood but is a photo quilt maple, mean it is an image, rather than a solid piece of wood. This means you get the beautiful aesthetics of an actual quilted maple top, but without the cost.
Asymmetrical Neck, Double Locking Trem
For seamless neck-to-body contact, the Sterling by Music Man SUB AX4 utilises the same 5-bolt neck joint seen in their Silo3 model. Also, as the body shape allows for easy access to the upper frets, the neck heel has been specially contoured to make working in the upper register extremely comfortable.
The guitar’s neck is crafted from maple and is finished with satin, for its smooth playability and tactile feel. Is has also been shaped to an asymmetrical profile, which is designed to give you comfort, no matter what techniques you are employing. The neck is rounded at the headstock end, giving a sizable amount of wood to get a grip on for chord work, while getting flatter as you make your way towards the bridge, making it easier to play individual notes quickly.
Joined to the top of the Sterling by Music Man SUB AX4 Electric Guitar’s neck is a 22-medium fret, maple fingerboard with dot position markers and a 12-inch radius. At one end of the neck you’ll find the difference between this model and the AX3, the SBMM double locking tremolo bridge. The very trem found on the AX40D, this trem keeps you in tune, no matter how much grief you give the whammy bar. At the other end of the neck you have an easy-access truss rod adjuster.
With seriously versatile electronics courtesy of a pair of Zebra humbucker pickups directly mounted into the body of the Sterling by Music Man S.U.B. AX4 and a 5-way pickup selector you have a wide range of tones at your disposal, with the capacity of humbucker and single-coil sounds from the one guitar.
