First there was the EVH Signature; a signature model crafted by Music Man for guitar legend, Eddie Van Halen, a model that continues today under the name, Axis. To put this enviable instrument within reach of more reasonable budgets, Sterling by Music Man have crafted the SUB AX4 Electric Guitar.
It may not be obvious, but the Sterling by Music Man SUB AX4 is actually a solid body guitar. The quilted maple top is an image, which while not an actual piece of wood, gives the same aesthetic but at a fraction of the price of its much more expensive counterpart.
The wood used in the construction of the guitar is also a bit different than your usual hardwoods. Rather than using the commonly-seen basswood, this instrument favours jabon, which provides a slightly weightier, sturdier feel, and also resonated better than basswood, for an improved tone.
The shape into which the wood has been formed is the classic silhouette of the Axis model, with incredible curves and a single cutaway opening up access to the higher frets.
Comfortable, Playable Neck, and a Double Locking Trem
Aiding the comfort of those who favour the upper register, the neck heel of the Sterling by Music Man S.U.B. AX4 Electric Guitar has been contoured specifically for this purpose. The guitar also loses nothing between neck and body, as the instrument features the same 5-bolt neck joint used in the construction of the Silo3.
For smooth playability and a tactile feel, the neck has been crafted from maple and finished with satin. An asymmetrical profile gives the neck a comfortable feeling, whether you are playing chords at the headstock end, where the neck is thicker and rounder, or playing fast-paced finger-picking style nearer the bridge, where the neck flattens out.
Atop the maple neck is a 12-inch radius, maple fingerboard, which is equipped with 22-medium frets and dot position inlays. Where this model differs from the AX3 is with the SBMM double locking tremolo bridge. A gift to dive-bombers, this addition keep your intonation solid, even during the most excessive of whammy bar use. Back at the nut end of the neck, is an easy-access truss rod adjuster.
Single-Coil to Humbucker at the Flick of a Switch
The Sterling by Music Man SUB AX4 is incredibly versatile, with single-coil, in addition to humbucker, tones available from the guitar. This is thanks to the special wiring of the electronics, which consist of a pair of Zebra humbucker pickups directly mounted into the body, and a 5-way pickup selector. This set up give you easy access to everything from chicken pickin’ single-coil sounds, right through to full-throated, massive-sounding humbucker tones.
