Putting an enviable model into the hands of those on a more reasonable budget, the Sterling by Music Man SUB AX4 Electric Guitar is built from the blueprints of the Music Man Axis, which itself was once known as the EVH Signature; a signature model crafted for Eddie Van Halen.
Jabon Body, Axis Shape
Rather than being crafted from basswood, the Sterling by Music Man SUB AX4 Electric Guitar utilises another hardwood, jabon. Slightly heavier than basswood, jabon feel sturdier in the hands and resonates better, to give an improved tone.
The shape of the guitar is instantly recognisable as that of the Axis, with beautiful curves and the added functionality of the single cutaway giving unbridled access to the upper frets.
Less obvious is the make-up of the guitar’s top. Although it looks like it, it is not actually made of a wood, instead the solid wood body has a photo quilt maple top, which gives the beautiful aesthetic of figured maple but without the additional cost.
Satin-Finished Maple Neck - Flat Top, Round Bottom
Crafted from maple and finished with satin, the neck of the Sterling by Music Man S.U.B. AX4 Electric Guitar offers smooth playability and a tactile feel that you won’t want to let go of. It has also been cultivated into an asymmetrical shape that gives you exactly what you want at both ends. The headstock end is all about chord work, so the neck is rounder and thicker, for quick note-picking at the bridge end the neck flattens out.
Speaking of the bridge end of the neck, the neck heel has been specifically-contoured for those who favour the upper register, making a comfortable home for your hand. Ensuring that not a drop of resonance is spilt in the journey between neck and body, the Sterling by Music Man S.U.B. AX4 incorporates a 5-bolt neck joint, the very same that appears on their Silo3 model.
Matching the neck, the fingerboard is also made from maple, and is equipped with dot position markers across 22-medium frets. The bridge here is a SBMM double locking tremolo, compared with the vintage trem of the AX3. This addition is perfect for players who favour dive-bombing, as it ensures your intonation will stay true throughout your performances. To make quick adjustments, the truss rod adjuster offers easy access.
The Sound You Want - Easy
With special wiring of the electrics, humbucker and single-coil tones are both available from the Sterling by Music Man SUB AX4, making it incredibly versatile. The pair of Zebra humbucker pickups, which have been directly mounted into the body of the guitar, are easy to control with the 5-way pickup selector switch giving you your choice of chicken pickin’ single-coil to thick and loud humbucker sounds, while Master Volume and Master Tone knobs give additional tone-sculpting options.
