The Strymon El Capistan dTape Echo Guitar Effects Pedal is a mind-blowing piece of kit that allows you to recreate timeless Tape Echo whenever you are. If you're looking for studio quality effects that you can take on the road, then this is the pedal you've been waiting for. The chassis is built using super-strong, lightweight anodized aluminium, with everything finished to an exceptionally high-standard of quality.

dTape Algorithm

The principle of traditional analogue tape echo machines works by using electromagnetic heads to record a signal, play it back and send that signal back to the record head to get re-recorded (and played back) repeatedly to create an echo effect. Tape speed and the distance between the playback heads play factors in the echo effect, creating lush shimmering sweeps or a stacked, layered effect. The beauty of analogue systems is that they are prone to a myriad of "defects" that gives each machine its own unique flavour.

Strymon has put their creative genius to the test in recreating the intricate characteristics of analogue tape echo machines, by employing a high-performance SHARC DSP to carry out mind-boggling mathematics in their complex dTape algorithm. The result is a smooth and faithful response that perfectly encapsulates the perfect representation of a mechanical system, with all the distinctive qualities it has to offer.

Tape Machines and Modes

There are three tape machine options to choose from: Fixed (one fixed playback head), Multi (multiple playback heads), and Single (sliding record head). Each tape machines option has three modes that allow you to get develop very individual echo options. The level of control you are afforded through Tape Head and Mode switches alone is truly remarkable, with a host of tap tempo controls, variable tape speeds, and tape head selections made available for huge versatility.

Front Panel Controls

Across the front panel are five control knobs, including: Time, Tape Age, Repeats, Wow & Flutter, and Mix. The Time knob controls the delay time according to the selected Tape Head type (Fixed, Multi, and Single). Not only that, but when you push down the Tap and Bypass footswitches together, each knob accesses a secondary function, opening up even more settings to play with. Whether you’re looking to: affect changes to delay times, manipulate specific frequency ranges to tighter or muddier echoes, control natural bandwidth modulation – even if you wish to mimics damaged tape conditions such as: friction, creases, splices, and contaminants -, you have everything you could imagine, in a neatly designed, compact unit.

Along the rear panel of the unit you'll find the 9V DC input, as well as the high impedance mono input, Expression pedal input for real-time control over any knob parameter, as well as stereo pair (right and left) outputs.

Exceptional Audio Quality

The dTape Echo boasts super low noise, A/D and D/A converters with an 115dB typical signal to noise ratio. The analog dry path results in zero latency, as it is never converted to digital, ensuring that your bypassed signal remains in pristine condition. With 20Hz to 20kHz frequency response, you can guarantee that the intricate nuances of your guitar tone is preserved dutifully.

The Strymon El Capistan dTape Echo Guitar Effects Pedal is a phenomenal pedal that should be the first thing professionals and amateurs alike call to mind when they are seeking a tape echo pedal. You would be hard pressed to find a digital pedal that can boast the expansive versatility that the El Capistan delivers, at a price that quite honestly makes it one of the bargains of the century.
