Description

Details

The Strymon OB.1 Optical Compressor and Clean Boost Guitar Effects Pedal is designed to deliver the beauty and elegance we all love about studio optical compressors, in a compact and lightweight footswitchable pedal. Everything from subtle and delicate to fat vintage compression, is on offer to tighten up or thicken out your tone, without losing any of the timbral nuances or characteristics of your guitar and amp.

Compression in Context

Compression is a very effective way of giving your rhythm and lead tones exceptional depth by improving sustain without the need to increase volume level or gain. This allows you to keep your tone nice and smooth, rather than introducing unwanted hiss or distortion.

Simplistic Control

The OB.1 has a three-way tone switch that affects treble, mid, and flat, allowing you to isolate frequency ranges that you wish to emphasise. If you're looking to tighten up your signal across the entire frequency range, flat is the perfect choice. If you wish to bring out the clarity of the upper register or create a chunky midrange burst, select between treble or mid. Though the layout is very simple, the versatility of this pedal is mind-blowing.

There are two footswitches at your disposal that control Boost and Bypass. The Boost switch engages the clean boost, which is a post compressor control. Therefore, you can give you tone an uncompressed lift of extra 10dB of full-frequency, mid or treble boost can be achieved. The Bypass footswitch engages and disengages the effect, and thanks to the true bypass circuitry, you can rest assured that your dry signal will remain unblemished.

There are three knob controls: Output, Boost Level, and Compressor. Output controls the overall level of the pedal. The Boost Level knob varies the amount of boost you wish to introduce into the signal when the Boost switch is activated, allowing you to inject greater energy into your signal, giving clean tones a fantastic lift without adding gain or distortion. It is worth noting that this can be used independently of the compression control. The Comp knob set the threshold of the compressor, going from a subtle spark to a funky dense swell. The OB.1 provides greater than 20dB of gain-compensated compression, whilst the clean boost offers and extra 10dB of full-frequency, mid or treble boost can be achieved.

Connectivity

Along the rear panel of the unit you'll find the 9V DC input, as well as the high impedance mono input and low impedance mono output.

Exceptional Quality

The OB.1 boasts a 100% analogue signal path, assuring the smoothest of responses that could be desired. The circuitry is housed in a super-strong and lightweight orange anodized aluminium chassis, which is lovingly crafted in the USA. As with all of their products, the Strymon OB.1 Optical Compressor and Clean Boost Guitar Effects Pedal is a magnificent pedal, which is worthy of its place on any professional’s pedal-board.
