The History of the flute
Some of the oldest instruments discovered around the world are ‘flutes’ carved from bone or bamboo.
How do flutes work?
Flutes for all intents and purposes are lengths of metal tubing, down which the player pushes air. There are a series of holes, precisely cut at different intervals along the tube which are covered by keys. When the keys are pressed the length of the tube changes and gives different pitches.
Because flutes are quite long, they are often able to be taken down into sections which can be packed into a compact case for easy and safe transportation.
Common Types of flute
The most common flutes are the G and the piccolo. You also find the alto and bass flutes. If you want to go stranger, there are contrabass models available.
